The Right Honourable
William Lyon
Mackenzie King

Liberal "It is what we prevent, rather than what we do that counts most in Government." Mackenzie King, August 26 1936 Private Life Did You Know? King had an odd hobby. He gathered stones from pre-confederation buildings being demolished in Ottawa and rebuilt them at Kingsmere, his country home in the Gatineau Hills. He erected many battered 'ruins' which he felt had a 'middle-ages' look.
  • Born: December 17, 1874, Berlin (later renamed Kitchener), Ontario.
    • (King's maternal grandfather was William Lyon Mackenzie, who lead the Rebellion in Upper Canada, 1837.)

  • Labour Consultant for the Rockerfeller Foundation, 1914-1918.
  • Author.
  • Died: Mount Pleasant Cemetery , Toronto, Ontario.
Political Career Did You Know? King firmly believed in the power of Crystal Balls and rarely made a serious decision without first consulting his 'psychic'. It was only after his diaries were examined following his death that King's interest in the occult was discovered.

http://www.kingwilliamassociation.org/neighborhood/history.htm
history The King William Association has the distinction of being what may be the only neighborhood association in the enter state with three historic districts within its boundaries, including the state’s oldest district created by city ordinance and two districts recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. All three districts are equally protected by city ordinances and share a common theme of historical and cultural importance. King William National Historic District The King William area was originally farmland, irrigated by acequias flowing from the San Antonio River, owned by the 1718 Mission San Antonio de Valero. By the beginning of the 19 th century, the missions were fully secularized, and the land belonging to Mission Concepcion was bought, sold, and divided into tracts by land speculators, beginning in the 1840’s. One of the earliest to settle was Carl Guenther, a German immigrant who built Pioneer Flour mill on the lower bend of the San Antonio River. A number of other successful and influential German immigrants discovered the area and began building mansions, using Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italiante architectural styles. Ernst Altgelt, the first to build on current-day King William Street, is credited with naming his street after King Wilhelm I of Prussia. In later years, the neighborhood fell into decline. In the 1960s, creative young professionals rediscovered the King William area and began a renaissance, which continues to this day.

KING WILLIAM AREA
Walking Tour History and Map
Printable Brochure The King William District occupies land that was once irrigated farm land belonging to the Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo. When the mission was secularized in 1793, the lands were divided among the resident Indian families from the mission or sold at public auction. The area call the King William Neighborhood of today was subdivided into lots in the 1860s and laid out with the present streets. It was about this time that a great many Germans who had immigrated to Texas in the 1840s began to settle in this area and it became known as "Sauerkraut Bend" to the rest of San Antonio. It developed into an idyllic neighborhood of large, impressive houses shaded by enormous pecan and cypress trees. The main entry street into the area was given the name King Wilhelm in honor of King Wilhelm I, King of Prussia in the 1870s. During World War I, when America was at war with Germany, the name was changed to Pershing Avenue. A few years after the war was over the original name was restored, but this time it was given the English version of the name, King William, and it has remained so since. In the early 1900s the King William District began to wane as a fashionable neighborhood and by 1920 many of the original home builders died and their children moved to other parts of San Antonio. During the 1930s and 1940s the neighborhood declined and many of the fine old homes were converted into apartments and general deterioration set in throughout the area. Only a few of the earlier settlers remained and maintained earlier standards.

    William Lyon Mackenzie King
On Saturday, July 22, 1950, William Lyon Mackenzie King died peacefully at his Kingsmere retreat near Ottawa. That ended one of the most remarkable lives in Canadian political history-a life which began right here in Berlin, Ontario, 75 years earlier. On Saturday, July 22, 2000 , the Waterloo Historical Society and Woodside National Historic Site combined to honor our community's most famous citizen-fifty years on! Mackenzie King was still Prime Minister when he last visited Kitchener in September 1947. Here he addresses a crowd from the steps of Kitchener City Hall. If the Kitchener Hotel across the road was removed, King would be looking directly at his birthplace on Benton Street. Within a year, Mackenzie King retired and within 3 years he had passed away. The boyhood home of Willie King is not to be missed. Inside you'll be transported back to the 1880s when John and Isabel King, along with their four children, Bella, Jennie, Max and Willie lived at Woodside. Mackenzie King always referred to his 8 years at Woodside as the most memorable of his life.

    59. Mackenzie King-Speeches-Temperance And A Total War Effort, December 16, 1942-Fir
A speech entitled Temperance and a Total War Effort given by Prime Minister Mackenzie King on Dec. 16, 1942.
    http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/primeministers/h4-4079-e.html
Canada and the war: temperance and a total war effort: national selective service broadcast, December 16, 1942
From the outset of the war, the Canadian people have clearly shown that it is their desire to help in every way to make Canada's war effort as effective as possible. To every appeal, whether for fighting men, for financial assistance, for war industries, for medical supplies, for auxiliary services, for civil defence and air raid precautions, for blood donations, for voluntary rationing, for salvage and conservation, or for any of the hundreds of other ways in which the individual citizen can serve, the response of the majority of our people has been splendid.
What Each Can Do to Help
Old and young, in all walks of life, are not only willing but eager to make their contribution to the winning of the war. From all quarters of the Dominion, men and women continue to ask of the government: What can I do to help the war effort ? Tonight, I wish at least in one particular, to answer that question, and in so doing to make an appeal for yet another kind of personal service. Like other forms of service, this one involves a measure of self-denia, and even more, perhaps, of self-discipline. Self-denial and self-discipline, however, will be recognized as the outstanding qualities of a good soldier. From the service I have in mind no one can be debarred because of age, physical disability, lack of opportunity, or for any other reason. I refer to temperance in the use of alcoholic beverages as a contribution to a total war effort. Here is a way in which everyone in Canada can help.
