Kleist, Heinrich von
German, 1777–1811
Although better known as a playwright and author of novellas, Kleist wrote a small number of essays that reveal his unique cast of mind. These essays, which are often ransacked by critics mistakenly seeking keys to Kleist’s other works, are seldom explored as contributions to the art of the essay. Kleist also penned terse anecdotes, admired by Kafka, which make the reader ponder issues similar to those raised by his essays. What gives Kleist’s essays their characteristic texture is the tension between his rationalistic quest for order and his intuitive grasp of the uncertainties of the human psyche. They disclose a mind caught uneasily between a hand-me-down faith in reason derived from 18th-century philosophy, Romantic notions about the importance of inner life, and a very modern sense of the inherently paradoxical nature of man’s lot.
Kleist’s first essay, “Aufsatz, den sichern Weg des Glücks zu finden” (Essay on the sure way of finding happiness), a juvenile piece of writing full of clichés culled from second-rate 18th-century thinkers, was probably written in 1799. His mature essays, anecdotes, theatrical reviews, and articles were written primarily for the Berliner Abendblätter (Berlin evening news), one of the first German dailies, which Kleist set up with the political economist Adam Müller in October 1810. Although the newspaper owed its short-lived success to the crime reports supplied by the Berlin chief of police, the occasional contributions by Kleist captivated discerning contemporaries such as the Brothers Grimm. However, after Kleist was obliged to close the newspaper in March 1811, these writings fell into oblivion until the surge of interest in his life and work in the early decades of this century.

The Beggar Woman of Locarno
Heinrich von Kleist
A t the foot of the Alps, near Locarno in Upper Italy, stood once a castle, the property of a marquis; of this castle, as one goes southward from the St. Gotthard, one sees now only the ashes and ruins. In one of its high and spacious rooms there once lay, on a bundle of straw which had been thrown down for her, an old, sick woman, who had come begging to the door, and had been taken in and given shelter out of pity by the mistress of the castle. The Marquis, returning from the hunt, happened to enter this room, where he usually kept his guns, while the old woman lay there, and angrily ordered her to come out of the corner where the bundle of straw had been placed and to get behind the stove. In rising the old woman slipped on the polished floor and injured her spine severely; so much did she hurt herself that only with unspeakable agony could she manage to cross the room, as she was ordered, to sink moaning behind the stove and there to die. Some years later the Marquis, owing to war and bad harvests, having lost most of his fortune, decided to sell his estates. One day a nobleman from Florence arrived at the castle which, on account of its beautiful situation, he wished to buy. The Marquis, who was very anxious to bring the business to a successful conclusion, gave instructions to his wife to prepare for their guest the above-mentioned room, which was now very beautifully furnished.

Biography
German poet, novelist and playwright. Born into a military family, he entered the Prussian army, 1792-1799, leaving to study mathematics and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt. He produced his first play in 1803, a tragedy. In 1807, he was arrested as a spy and imprisoned. When released, he lived in Dresden where he published a literary periodical. Too passionately nationalistic for occupied Germany, Kleist was not recognized in his time, and in his despair over his latest writing, a political newspaper, he arranged for his suicide. At the time, he had a fatal passion for Henriette Vogel and he shot her to death before turning the gun on himself, 11/21/1811, near Potsdam, Germany. Link to Wikipedia biography

"On the Puppet Theater" (1811) From An Abyss Deep Enough: Letters of Heinrich von Kleist with a Selection of Essays and Anecdotes . Edited, Translated, and Introduced by Philip B. Miller. EP Dutton.
While passing the winter of 1801 in the town of M I chanced one evening, in the public garden, to meet Mr. C., who had lately been appointed chief dancer at the Opera in that town, and was enjoying uncommon success with his audiences. I said how surprised I had been to notice him more than once at a puppet theater which had been hammered together in the marketplace, to entertain the crowds with little mock heroic dramas, interspersed with songs and dances. He assured me that the pantomime of these puppets gave him much pleasure, and suggested in no uncertain terms that any dancer who wished to improve his art might learn all sorts of things from them. Since the remark, and his tone of voice, implied something more than a passing fancy, I sat down with him, the better to hear the grounds on which he would support so strange an assertion.

Jump to: navigation search Kleist, Heinrich von (1777-1811). German, Writer. Bernd Heinrich Wilhelm von Kleist is considered one of the great dramatists and novella writers of world literature. A member of a Prussian noble family, Kleist grew up in military surroundings and joined a regiment of the Potsdam guards. Finding that the emphasis on discipline and the monotony of military life did not appeal to his creative personality, he left the army in 1799. Initially, Kleist set out to realize what he called his “life-plan”: the quest for knowledge and truth. He studied physics and mathematics, and later he developed an interest in music and philosophy. A product of the Enlightenment, he believed that life could be planned and that all things could be understood. In 1801, Kleist gave up his studies after his reading of the philosophy of Kant, Immanuel had shaken his faith in the value of knowledge. The stabilizing influence of his life-plan was gone. Kleist now questioned the superiority of reason and directed his attention instead to the soul. In his personal and professional life, he was constantly at odds with the wishes of his family and the expectations of early nineteenth-century Prussia. In 1802, his literary career began, and his occasional bouts of depression intensified. His first play
