Janusz Korczak in 1925 Where the concentration camp at Treblinka used to stand, a garden now contains 17,000 memorial stones to represent the villages, towns, and countries of the million men, women, and children slaughtered there. Only one stone bears a person's name: it reads JANUSZ KORCZAK (HENRYK GOLDSZMIT) AND THE CHILDREN A Polish Jew, Janusz Korczak (1878-1942) was a medical doctor, radio celebrity, and author who sacrificed himself to protect 200 children in a Jewish orphanage he founded amidst the chaos of the Nazi-occupied Warsaw Ghetto. Korczak maintained the orphanage as a refuge until he and his orphans were suddenly expelled from it and led to certain death at Treblinka. From Korczak's Orphans at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in 2008. Giuseppe Spoletini (Bula Szulc) and Tracy Wise (Janusz Korczak) It is curious to consider why Korczak, early on in the midst of a thriving medical practice and burgeoning literary career, gave up the kind of wealth and ease both might have afforded him to spend the rest of his life tending to the needs of orphaned children. He used his influence to gain necessary supplies for his orphanage: food, money, and medicine. Unwilling to let the Nazi occupiers define him, he refused to wear the yellow Star of David required for all Jews, an offense for which he was jailed by the Gestapo. As the war progressed and his grim fate became increasingly evident, his response was to prepare himself and the children for a dignified processional out of the gates of the orphanage, past a stunned citizenry and muted cadre of SS officers.

Korczak, Janusz
  • A hundred children, a hundred individuals who are peoplenot people-to-be, not people of tomorrow, but people now, right nowtoday. Life bites like a dog, and when least expected. Children, being small and weak, have little market value. Don't try to become a teacher overnight with psychological bookkeeping in your heart and educational theory in your head. I am a butterfly drunk with life. I don't know where to soar, but I won't allow life to clip my beautiful wings. I am well versed in reading the pages of war. If I had means, I would like to spend half a year in Palestine in order to contemplate what has been, and half a year in Poland in order to preserve what remains. Life is a circus ring, with some moments more spectacular than others. Life never gives more than partial liberation. Achievement can never be more than fragmentary. Man feels and ponders death as though it were the end, when in fact death is merely the continuation of life. It is another life. You may not believe in the existence of the soul, yet you must acknowledge that your body will live on as green grass, and as a cloud. For you are, after all, water and dust. The childa skilled actor with a hundred masks: a different one for his mother, father, grandmother or grandfather, for a stern or lenient teacher, for the cook or maid, for his own friends, for the rich and poor. Naive and cunning, humble and haughty, gentle and vengeful, well behaved and willful, he disguises himself so well that he can lead us by the nose.

Home Library Fairy Tale Companion Korczak, Janusz (pseudonym of the Polish writer and educator Henryk Goldszmidt , 1878–1942), author of the utopian fairy‐tale novel Król Macuis I King Matt the First , 1986). He was the director of an orphanage in the Warsaw ghetto and voluntarily followed the children into the gas chambers of the concentration camp at Treblinka. The novel is set in a fictional European kingdom. Little Matt is 6 years old when his father the king dies and Matt becomes king. In an adventurous plot, reminiscent of The Prince and the Pauper , Matt runs away and learns about the real needs of his people. He tries to be a just and generous ruler and to provide for the children of his country. However, his reforms fail, mostly owing to his inexperience and idealism, and the betrayal of adults. After a long series of adventures and trials, Matt is defeated in a war, captured by the neighbouring king, and exiled to a desert island. Korczak's fairy tale is based on his firm belief in children's rights as well as his profound knowledge of their psychological needs. However, the pessimistic ending of the novel leaves no illusions as to the possibility of the fulfilment of his ideals. There are no magical or supernatural elements in the novel, but most episodes are built up as a typical fairy‐tale quest, and the heroic character of the young king is emphasized. This is an inverted
