23. Speech By Nancy Kress
Transcript of a speech made at ConFuse 93 and the question and answer session which followed.

Speech by Nancy Kress
This is a transcription of Nancy Kress' guest of honour speech held at ConFuse 93. The transcription is based on Kress' written manuscript. Some changes have been made, primarily to the parts not in the manuscript, to make the text more readable. The transcription was made by Tommy Persson. I have to start by saying that I had half of carafe of wine at dinner so I am not exactly sure how this is going to go but I have been told that Ian McDonald last year had a lot more than that. He was still able to deliver a splendid speech so I feel that I have a good model ahead of me. I was also told that since everybody else here had more than half a carafe of wine there will be a certain tolerance. My topic tonight is ''Women in American Science Fiction'' and after having been here at your splendid convention for two days, it seems to me that this is an especially appropriate topic, because as I was just discussing with a small but ardent group standing out in the rain I've really been surprised how few women science fiction fans have shown up for this convention. And I am told that you do not have a single female science fiction writer in Sweden so I would like to talk about women in American science fiction. I have been reading science fiction and fantasy for nearly thirty years, ever since I discovered Arthur C. Clarke's

24. Kress, Maximum Light (004kfrn1)
Kress, Nancy. 1998. Maximum Light. New York Tor. Reviewed 10 April 1998. I must admit some hesitancy in reviewing Ms. Kress's latest novel.
http://www.authorslawyer.com/savage/reviews/004kren1.shtml
Kress, Nancy. 1998. Maximum Light . New York: Tor. Reviewed 10 April 1998 far has been her short fiction. Her novels often seem to suffer from a failure of the imagination as they near the climax. I found Beggars in Spain particularly troublesome in this regard. Maximum Light Maximum Light 's premise is neither overly complex nor hidden from the reader. Basically, the book conjectures that continued use of "synthetic endocrine disrupters" found in just about everything synthetic have led to a serious fertility crisis. The government, in the tradition of governments everywhere, stonewalls, because the economic ramifications of doing anything about the sources of these disrupters will result in loss of power for the entrenched few. The novel, however, isn't so much about the government as about three people caught up, in various ways, in the whole situation. Ms. Kress's speculation is quite plausible. Her characters are well-developed, and each remains consistent both inside and outside the shifting viewpoints. The failure of imagination and naivete, however, come toward the end of the novel, and were a great disappointment. Not to give away too much, but whistleblowers don't get off that easily, and their "we'll fix it by going public" plot simply could not have hatched given the surveillance technology and use presented elsewhere in the book. One last observation: Maximum Light 's resolution is also incomplete. One must wonder whether Ms. Kress will return to this problem with a new set of characters and advance beyond the climactic news conference.

Nancy Kress
conducted December 12, 1996
Jim Freund: Tonight at 10:00 PM, Eastern Time, our guest will be sf writer Nancy Kress. What follows is her entry from "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" by John Clute:
Nancy Kress: US writer who began publishing sf with "The Earth Dwellers" for Gal in 1976, and whose first novels were fantasies like The Prince of Morning Bells (1981), a quest tale during which, surprisingly, the young princess involved ages into an old woman before the close, and The Golden Grove (1984), which, again surprisingly, treats Greek myth with something of the iron darkness it merits. After a further fantasy novel, The White Pipes (1985), and an intermittently rewarding collection, Trinity and Other Stories (coll 1985), which includes the NEBULA-winning "Out of All Them Bright Stars" (1985), NK moved forthrightly into sf with her fourth novel, the slow-moving but cumulatively impressive AN ALIEN LIGHT Beggars in Spain (1992) which expands the novella into an ironic saga set partly in space, is almost certainly her best work yet; with (1994), the sequence has begun to acquire the scope and to encounter some of the difficulties of focus of genuine Future HISTORY. Her recent fiction much of which makes virtuoso use of sf devices, but from an angle of vision which gives the impression that the author deems them irremediably belated appears in

An SF Moderate Climbs Cautiously Onto the Barricades
Nancy Kress Keynote Address Given at Alaskon '91 and Balticon 25. In the years since I've been a science fiction writer, I've been to a lot of conventions. That means I've heard a lot of my colleagues give speeches. When I started to think about what kind of keynote address I wanted to give here today, I realized that I'm laboring under a great handicap. The most memorable GoH speeches I've heard have been either wildly funny or radically provocative, boldly announcing something like where science fiction should be headed for the next twenty-five years, or what's wrong with everything that's ever been written up till this point, or what's wrong with everyone who's written it, read it, published it, or walked past it in a book store. Some speeches managed to do both these things be wildly funny about blowing up entire populations. Sort of like Darth Vader on nitrous oxide. The handicap I'm laboring under, therefore, is two-fold. First, and minorly, that I'm not going to be wildly funny. (Sorry.) Second, and majorly, that my opinions tend to be moderate, not radical. Who wants to hear moderate, reasoned, balanced opinions from someone giving a speech? No one. That's how we end up with the presidential candidates we do. But then I decided, in a moderate sort of way, to give the matter another think-through. Surely I could manage to be wildly radical on some topic? Surely I could take a bold, non-conventional stand on some aspect of writing SF? Surely I could trash somebody writers or fans or publishers or cover artists or copyeditors or the people who glue paperback bindings together in a moderate sort of way?

28. Interview With Nancy Kress
Transcript of an interview conducted in 1993.

Interview with Nancy Kress
The following is a transcription of the interview with Nancy Kress at ConFuse 93. The transcription was done by Hans Persson. The text has been edited by Tommy Persson and Hans Persson to make it more readable. Carina Björklind : When I have read your books, I have got the impression that you write about technology from a humanistic tradition or viewpoint. It's obvious to me sometimes that you're not acquainted in detail with the technology but you use it very nicely, you get the characters together and all this. What's your background? Nancy Kress itself that were that interesting I would write a scientific essay. Or rather, I would read somebody else's scientific essay who knew what they were talking about. But science fiction is first and foremost fiction, and that means that what really interests me is the impact of these technological advances on human populations, large populations, small populations, and individuals. That doesn't mean that a science fiction writer doesn't have an obligation to try and get the science right. I think we do have an obligation to try to get it right and I do try, even when I get the details wrong. But it's of secondary importance. The main thing is, how will this impact people? Will it change our society? Will our society have to change around it? Will it mean that there are different winners and losers than there are at the moment? Will this change things that human beings have always wanted and longed for and loved, or will it change the way that they get those things or attempt to go about getting those things and that to me is the more important question and that is where I focus my attention.

She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her husband, SF author Charles Sheffield. In the early nineties, Nancy Kress took the SF world by storm with her multiple award-winning novella, "Beggars in Spain," which became the basis for her extremely successful Sleepless Trilogy (comprising Beggars in Spain, Beggars and Choosers, and Beggars Ride). Since then she has written more than a dozen novels, most recently the well-received Probability Trilogy, which Booklist praised saying "Kress's characterizations are as sound as ever, but many will be agreeably surprised at her proficiency with military hardware and action scenes.
