This is the second of four brief articles published in the Oberlin Review. Like "The Relation of Art to Morality" and "De Quincey," it's basically art criticism. Historically, it bears witness to Mead's lifelong interest in English poetry and prose

Charles Lamb
The essays of Elia are the foundation of Lamb's literary fame, for they speak of Lamb's own thought and life. He has given us some moderate poetry, two or three verses that have real merit. He has written some fine criticisms, especially of Shakespeare, but these are little known now. Such poetry dies soon. Criticism is a plant of short life, but essays, that portray so truly the life of a man of Lamb's talent, will live with the English language. Lamb had a most intimate sympathy with the past. The quaintness of former poets meant more to him than the beauties of modern. He appreciated the somewhat doggerel rhymes of Quarles and Bunyan more than the verses of Shelley and Byron. He indeed saw some of the beauties of the poetry of Coleridge and Wordsworth, but he did not appreciate their best works. He preferred the "Religious Musings" to the "Mont Blanc." He acknowledged the genius of Coleridge, and was always inspired by his influence, but he also acknowledged the wholly different and higher order of Coleridge's mind.

Biography
British essayist, poet and critic who wrote for magazines and papers while working as an accounting clerk for 33 yrs. He was educated at the charity school Christ's Hospital, 1782-1789, where fellow students included Leigh Hunt and Sam Coleridge, with whom he maintained a lifetime friendship. Lamb first became a clerk in South Sea House in 1789 and from there moved to East India House, where he remained 1792-1825. In 1796, he published his first set of sonnets; the year that his sister, Mary Ann, killed their mom in a fit of madness. His first poetic works were unsuccessful, including one novel, "A Tale of Rosamund Gray," and two plays. Lamb did receive some recognition for his children's book, "Tales from Shakespeare," 1807, and an anthology. His most noted work was the series, "Essays of Elia," showing gentle humor, tender sympathy and devotion to family and friends. Lamb applied and was appointed the guardianship of his sister after the murder of their mother, to keep her from being placed in an insane asylum. He spent the rest of his life taking care of her and never married. Lamb died 12/27/1834, Edmonton, London, England.

No better introduction to William Shakespeare's dramatic masterpieces exists than the delightful prose adaptations of Charles and Mary Lamb, first published in 1807. The two selected 20 of Shakespeare's best-known plays and set out both to make them accessible to children and to pay enthusiastic homage to the original works. Together the Lambs distilled the powerful themes and unforgettable characterizations of Shakespeare's plays into elegant narrativesclassic tales in their own right. Charles took responsibility for such powerful tragedies as Othello Macbeth Hamlet , and King Lear , while Mary worked on the comedies: brilliant fantasies like A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest , and thought-provoking plays like Measure for Measure Cymbeline , and The Merchant of Venice . As the authors point out in their Preface, their versions of the tragedies tend to rely on the language of the original plays, while the comedies are more freely adapted. But all of the Lambs' storieswith their clear, supple, and rhythmic prosereward any reader, whether encountering Shakespeare for the first time or revisiting his work.
