Introductory Notes Anne Lamott was born in San Francisco, California, in 1954, the daughter of Kenneth Lamott (a writer) and Dorothy Lamott (who later became an attorney). In addition to her novels and nonfiction books, she wrote a food column for California magazine (1988-1991) and a book review column for Mademoiselle (1990-1992), and has been a regular contributor to the online magazine Salon and to National Public Radio.
The publication of Operating Instructions in 1993 brought Lamott to national prominence. Critics often use phrases such as “edgy humor” and “caustic wit” to describe her writing, both fiction and nonfiction. Much of her work, particularly her earlier pieces, contains autobiographical elements such as her childhood in a dysfunctional family and her financial and creative struggles as a writer. Lamott was born in San Francisco , and is a graduate of Drew School . Her father, Kenneth Lamott, was also a writer. His death was the focus of her first published novel Hard Laughter . She has one son, Sam, who was born in 1989 and a grandson, Jax. Lamott's life was documented in Freida Lee Mock 's 1999 documentary Bird by Bird with Annie: A Film Portrait of Writer Anne Lamott Because of the documentary and her following on Facebook and other online networks, she is often called the "People's Author". Lamott has described why she writes: "I try to write the books I would love to come upon, that are honest, concerned with real lives, human hearts, spiritual transformation, families, secrets, wonder, craziness—and that can make me laugh. When I am reading a book like this, I feel rich and profoundly relieved to be in the presence of someone who will share the truth with me, and throw the lights on a little, and I try to write these kinds of books. Books, for me, are medicine."

This is Jules Older, and I've got a bone to pick with one of my favorite writers. Stay tuned, and get in on the fight. Announcer: Jules Older is crazy about a certain writer. But the course of love does not always run smooth. Anne Lamott is my favorite writer who writes about writing.
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott is my favorite book about writing.
Word by Word by Anne Lamott is my favorite audio tape about writing.
So why aren't I happy with Anne Lamott? Because of something she said at the beginning of Tape One, Side One. She said: "Publication has nothing to offer you... It will work like a big plate of cocaine, where if you get the good news, it will take your mind off things for awhile. And then very quickly you will need more good news and better good news." Lamott argues, "The writing itself can provide the solace, the illumination, the direction, the self-awareness... and it can open your heart. And there's nothing more important than that." She dismisses publication as like "like being on the rat exercise wheel."

Jennifer_Gibbons's Full Review: Lamott, Anne It was ten years ago this year that I first read All New People-I just saw Anne Lamott on a talk show and I knew I would like this woman-and I knew I would love her writing. I was not wrong.
Nanny Goodman has moved back to the Marin town she grew up-still haunted by her troubled, yet charming childhood. She is raised by a atheist writer of a father(the character is semi based on Lamott's own father, Ken Lamott) and her mother who believes in God and takes Nanny every Sunday to a African American church.
Nanny fights off feelings of not fitting in-she is made fun of by her so called best friend Mady White, she is ignored when her father writes an article tearing apart their town, and a public scandal concerning her uncle Ed and Natalie, Nan's mother's best friend. Also in the town they live is changing because of the sixties, and also it is becoming more and more well to do, widening the gap between the haves and have nots.
