Book Description Customer Reviews: Sadly, a lesser effort Now, I love Joe, and any new story from him is a cause to celebrate, but I felt that "Lost Echoes" was definitely a lesser effort. The idea of traumatic events trapped in sound is a great hook, but the story is weak and the characters are nowhere near as colorful as his usual cast. Some of the pivitol action is as cliched as old movie serials, but without the sense of over-the-top fun that is Joe's trademark. I've turned a lot of people into fans of Joe's work, but I wouldn't start anyone out by loaning them this one. I'd rank "Lost Echoes" a little higher than "Freezer Burn" but it is nowhere near the wild ride of "Mucho Mojo" or "Two Bear Mambo," nor as thoughtful as "A Fine Dark Line" or "The Bottoms." A Touch of the Supernatural Harry Wilkes is a college student who has visions through sounds due to a severe ear infection when he was a child. He developed a drinking problem due to the horror of his visions. After childhood friend Kayla comes back into his life looking for help into solving the suspicious suicide death of her father, Harry takes his life in hand and deals with his gift (or curse) head-on.

In his foreword to this chicken-fried and jalapeño-laced story collection, a follow-up to High Cotton (2000), Lansdale ( The Bottoms ) describes these 26 tales as graduates from the "twist and surprise and ain't that damn weird school." He's about right. Published between 1982 and 2003, the tales reflect the influences of the author's East Texas roots, the "California school of horror (Bradbury, Nolan, Matheson, etc.)" and T. E. D. Klein's editorship of Twilight Zone magazine during horror's '80s heyday. Among the best are the laugh-out-loud "Chompers," about some really hungry false teeth; the luridly cartoonish "Fat Man," featuring two way-too-curious boys; "Bestsellers Guaranteed," a story any would-be bestselling author can and should appreciate; and the Bradburyesque "In the Cold, Dark Time," about a future war that now no longer sounds so distant or impossible. Other memorable selections include "Cowboy," with its biting cultural commentary on the plight of the African-American cowboy; the grotesque "God of the Razor," with its nightmare vision of serial killers; "Billie Sue," with its wacky whizbang lovers; and "The Shaggy House," with its irresistible old farts. Lord of the neo-noir Southern Gothic, Lansdale reveals once again that while these stories might not be for the weak of stomach, they're perfect for everyone else trying to get through the pain of contemporary American life. In the middle of a cyclone, beautiful, red-haired Sunset Jones shoots her husband Pete dead when he tries to beat and rape her. To Camp Rapture’s general consternation, Sunset’s mother-in-law arranges for her to take over from Pete as town constable. As if that weren’t hard enough to swallow in depression era east Texas, Sunset actually takes the job seriously, and her investigation into a brutal double murder pulls her into a maelstrom of greed, corruption, and unspeakable malice. It is a case that will require a well of inner strength she never knew she had. Spirited and electrifying

Lots happening these days. Heading tomorrow to Austin to see my daughter perform at the Carousel Lounge at 7pm, then have Armadillocon this weekend. In Gettysburg, PA next weekend for Horrorfind con, then home a week and in Dallas for Fencon, then Tyler for an event. Wonder if I will ever have time to write again with all this travel. Been asked to Judge the Torino film fest in Torino, Italy around November, after returning home from my Italian book tour in October. Busy busy. Good though.

So, back from the Florida Keys, and it must agree with me. Wrote half a novel there, a young adult novel titled ALL THE EARTH THROWN TO THE SKY, and I must admit, I like it a lot. Spend this week so far still on a role, and should finish shortly, then time to revise. Sold a few short stories, and have had a number come out. Oddly, most of them are reprints, and three or four of them are in zombie anthologies. THE NEW DEAD has a new piece of mine, and I seem to be the only one in the book out of step, but Chris Golden, the fine editor of the book, asked originally that the stories be about how people dealth with death, and need not be zombie stories. I thought, good, I don't want to write a zombie story. The result is SHOOTING POOL, which deals with the idea of emotinal zombiism, but not the living dead, least not in the strictest meaning of the words.

EVERYBODY PLAYS THE FOOL found in that storm. He'd actually been in two tornadoes. That's why he was so weather wise. The first tornado didn't bear the same merit in his book though. It had come about when he was ten, had jumped over his house not hurting anyone, only shaking them up a bit and filling their nostrils with the smell of rain and ozone. It had jerked away his family's TV antenna, and had stolen a Holstein cow from the pasture at the back of their house. Jerry had seen the cow go. He'd been standing on the back porch looking across the yard, out through Old Man Winston's barbed wire fence and into the pasture at the cow, when the storm, moaning like a locomotive, came over the house in a bad goddamn mood and in the shape of a giant asphalt-colored snow cone container. It jumped down on the cow, wadded the antenna around her before whirling her up into the blackness of the storm, and carrying her off without so much as time for the cow to look up or say moo. If so, he figured they were getting better reception than his family ever had. Back then, come nine or ten o'clock at night, you had to go out and turn the antenna some to keep Shreveport coming in if you wanted to watch a late movie or whatever showed after the news. And it hadn't gotten any better when they got the new antenna either. You had to start jacking with that one an hour earlier, trying to twist it just right so the TV waves, or whatever the hell carried the picture through the air, would float in from Shreveport and leap into that aluminum sucker and run down it and through the main wire and into the Sylvania television set with the white dolly on top supporting a batch of dust-covered plastic roses and a sprig of green plastic leaves, species unidentifiable.
