Choose Me
Evelyn Lau
Manufacturer: Doubleday Canada Ltd. 1999
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Unknown Binding
ASIN: Book Description In this latest collection of short fiction, Evelyn Lau's elegant prose explores the complexity of human relationships. Though they long to be chosen, the women in Lau's stories are drawn to men they can't have, men whose allure fades the more available they become. The wives and lovers of those men confront each other with a discordant mix of admiration and jealousy.
In the novella, "Choose Me," Becky's attraction to Warner is equalled in intensity by her fascination with Annabelle, his aging but still glamorous wife. Zoe, the young poet of "Family," retreats from Douglas when she realizes that their involvement will never rival the "grand passion" he once shared with his wife. In "Suburbia," Belinda is increasingly disgusted by every aspect of her lover, as more and more she comes to see him through his wife's disappointed gaze.
With a precise eye and a deft touch, Lau explores the ambiguous motives that propel her characters into emotional and sexual entanglements. Lau's use of language is controlled, and her images sensuously described.

Evelyn Yee-Fun Lau was born in Vancouver on July 2, 1971 to Chinese immigrants. Her parents were obsessively ambitious on behalf of their children (Lau has one younger sister), demanding constant top performance at school and expecting their eldest daughter, Evelyn, to become a medical doctor. When she reached the age of 10 things got even worse as her father became unemployed and withdrew into emotional passivity - ". . . one of the most traumatic events in my childhood," Lau later recalled. She had been closely attached to her father, her source of protection from her neurotic mother. Writing was her means of psychological survival. Lau claims to have been conscious of her urge to become a writer since she was six. In 1983 (age 12) she began publishing poems and short stories in "little magazines. " permissions info] Early in 1986 she ran away from her unbearable existence as a social outcast in school and as a suppressed, unloved daughter at home. She became a drug abuser and prostitute in Vancouver - living mostly at social institutions and chronicling in her diary her psychologically battered life and her struggle as an emerging writer. The manuscript became a bestseller when it was published in 1989 under the title

an okay book I didn't really find this book all that interesting and appealing, although it wasn't that badly written. Basically the stories deal with prostitution and sexuality, and are influenced by the author's own experiences as a child-prostitute. Her writing was a big thing on the Canadian literature scene a while back, her being relatively young when her first works were published. If you want to sample her writing, I guess this is a good place to start; the book is relatively easy to find secondhand and is pretty short. Should only take an hour or two to read. a new favorite.

    Book Description
"When do you follow your desire?" writers were asked. "When do you censor it? When is it a force to be trusted, and when do you become suspicious? When is it a source of power, and when a source of distress?" The answers comprise this deliciously daring, eloquent book. Whether describing the satisfactions of a long-term relationship or the thrill of the first time with someone new, secret crushes or unabashed attractions, these writers including Shani Mootoo and Carol Shields are working at the top of their form. Sometimes subtle, sometimes raunchy, but always provocative, these essays challenge prevailing myths about women, love, and lust. Treble

Moving seamlessly through past and present, Lau describes how her complex, painful relationship with her parents has shaped her adult desires, thwarting her efforts to connect with both men and women. She recalls her dangerous battle with bulimia and examines her continued struggle against crippling depression. ...
