The Nature of Magic, in Le Guin and Tolkien
Posted by Philip Martin under Le Guin, Ursula K. Tolkien. J.R.R. magic in fantasy Leave a Comment The description of magic, and the underlying concept of it, is variously tackled in many a fantasy book. What does it feel like to use magic? Is it a tool, a technique? An external force? Or is it an art? A gift? Tolkien wrote (in an undated letter, probably in 1951) that in Middle-earth, in The Lord of the Rings To find an insightful description of magic and how it feels to use it, look to the writings of Ursula Le Guin, author of the famed Earthsea series, and more recently, an excellent series ( Annals of the Western Shore ) that includes the novel Gifts Voices (2006), and Powers About Powers The Globe and Mail said: Gifts What does it feel like to use the great powers of magic?

Those who have read the two companion books in the series (Gifts and Voices) will be intrigued to find that Gavir finally meets several of those characters towards the end of this novel. When Gavir and his sister Sallo are captured in the Marsh, they are brought as slaves to the House of Arca where both are treated well. Gavir has two unique powers: remembering everything he has ever seen or heard and "remembering" things that have not happened yet. Sallo convinces him that he needs to keep that latter gift to himself. Marriage is not something that happens to slaves, but Sallo is given to the eldest son Yaven. Since she has loved him for a long time, she is happy. FANTASY BOOK SELECTION
EARTHSEA "TRILOGY"
by
URSULA K. LE GUIN A Wizard of Earthsea
The Tombs of Atuan
The Farthest Shore
Covers above are from Bantam books editions published in the late 1970s. Illustrated by Ruth Robbins.
Current editions of these books have different covers.
There are more Earthsea books than this "trilogy". Le Guin has in recent years written more books in the Earthsea cycle. The Earthsea books are classics of high fantasy. Originally marketed for teenagers, these books gained much wider appeal. Set on an archipelago on an ocean world, they involve the Wizard Ged, also called Sparrowhawk, at different points in his life.
A Wizard of Earthsea
Ged is a peasant boy from Gont with a gift of magic. He goes to the School of Wizards on Roke Island. Attempting to prove his superiority with magic he recklessly brings forth a shadow being from the realm of the dead that he must confront. The Tombs of Atuan Ged is encountered years later in an dark, underground labyrinth by the young High Priestess Arha, also called Tenar. She was taken from her family as a girl to become a priestess to the Nameless Ones. Ged is a powerful wizard seeking the missing half of the Ring of Erreth-Akbe, on which is engraved the broken Rune of Peace. She makes him her prisoner, but sees that she is bound by meaningless ritual.

I own more books by Ursula Le Guin than by any other author - twenty five as of mid-2000. My favourite works are from her "classical" period - the Earthsea trilogy and the science fiction novels The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) and The Dispossessed (1975). I might work up the courage to review the last two one day. For more information about Le Guin, see her official site Subjects Titles Authors ...

Science and Fantasy
By Elizabeth Hand Oct. 29, 1995 The four interconnected novellas in this collection are set on Werel and its colony world, Yeowe. For eons, Werel's has been a capitalist slave culture. Numerous forces, including first contact with the Ekumen, slowly but irrevocably lead to a War of Liberation waged by Werel's "assets," whose rebellion establishes Yeowe as a free world. But these stories are not concerned with the pyrotechnics and intrigue of warfare (though there is some of both). LeGuin's literary canvas is as busy and colorful as a Brueghel, but she is essentially a miniaturistGoddess is in the details here. So "Betrayals" tells of the unexpected and unconventional relationship that springs up between a 60-year-old woman on religious retreat and an exiled politician. "Forgiveness Day" is another odd love story, featuring an envoy from the Ekumen and her soldier bodyguard. Substitute the place-names of Terran Third World countries for LeGuin's interplanetary ones, and these two tales could be found in any contemporary anthology; the other stories, the wistful "A Man of the People" and "A Woman's Liberation" are a different thing entirely. This last is the strongest work of the four, a harshly detailed, often brutal account of liberation from the point of view of a woman who flees one form of servitude only to find anotherbut who lives to transcend these bonds as well. Like all of LeGuin's best work, Four Ways to Forgiveness is subtle and infinitely rewarding, a rich tapestry of other worlds drawn from everyday life. Pregnant-man Story

For more information on feminist SF, see the Introduction After World War I, the writing of utopian fiction gradually declined, until the genre almost disappeared in mid-century, to be replaced by dystopias (descriptions of ultimately evil places) like George Orwell's Nineteen-Eighty-Four (1948). However, in the mid-seventies there was a spate of new utopias written by Americans inspired by the upsurge of social reform begun in the late sixties and continuing into the new decade. The most famous examples are Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia, Samuel R. Delany's Triton, and this novel, though there are many other examples. What differentiated these new utopias was their attempt to evade the traditional criticisms of the old utopias like Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward: that they were static, boring, and unattainable. After all, utopias are not required, by definition, to be perfect. There seemed no reason to believe that all of humanity's problems could be solved through improved social organization; but it seemed possible that

    Ursula K. Le Guin
Ursula K. Le Guin is one of the best and most prolific writers of science fiction and fantasy in the world. She's published 20 novels and written several short story collections, children's books and poetry. She's a creator of other worlds, sometimes with wizards and dragons, sometimes with spaceships and telepathy. Her new book, Lavinia , is based on a character from Virgil's epic poem The Aeneid In Virgil's story, we meet Lavinia only fleetingly as the second wife of Aeneas, the epic's hero, who travelled to Italy and became the ancestor of the Romans. Her mother wants her to marry her cousin Turnus, who reigns over the neighbouring kingdom, but Lavinia seems to have doubts. The day before Aeneas arrives by ship, in an omen, Lavinia's hair swirls in a ghostly fire. This apparently augurs war, and that's what happens. Ursula Le Guin retells the last six books of the twelve-book poem from the point of view of Lavinia, a confident and outspoken young woman with a respect for the power of spirits, especially the spirit of Virgil.
