Re-reading "It Was Christmas. And do you know where ..." I've been searching U.S. libraries for years for Leacock's works to relive the laughter of my first reading particularly the attack up the parapets by the horde which had to retreat backwards. Can you steer me to copies of these works? I'm just dying to laugh like that again. Winsome Winnie and other New Nonsense Novels List Price: Price:

Old romantic and tragic novels This book should be considered a collection of short novellas. Like reading of cads and bounders, shady lawyers and tragic damsels in distress.. this book has them all. I think that the comic element in these stories is this books saving grace. Reminding one of silent movie hero's and heroines.. dramatic to say the least, fun fast read. If you love an old style novel if Dickens appeals to you ... you will love this book

Stephen Leacock
Leacock wrote much non-fiction, but he is best known for his humorous fiction. His first collection of humorous stories appeared in 1910, Literary Lapses Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town (1912) and Arcadian Adventures with the Idol Rich (1914). In the former, Leacock takes us to small-town Ontario, and while the people and practices of this town are clearly satirized, it is done with a great deal of affection. The latter takes place in a large American city and is much more scathing in its criticism of what Leacock saw as a hypocritical, self-serving and ultimately destructive economic upper-class. Leacock also wrote extensively about humor, which he saw as the ultimate expression of human kindness and progress. He wrote about Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and others, and his thesis is most fully developed in Humour and Humanity (1937). While some critiqued his reliance on a "lesser" genre, Leacock remained dedicated to his first love, humor. (Lee Skallerup)

Leacock, Stephen
Canadian, 1869–1944
One issue to which Leacock returned regularly in his legion of articles on history, economics, and political science was the question of “the Empire.” To him, Anglo- American imperialism was never irreconcilable with his own sense of nationalism but was a complementary “recognition of a wider citizenship” (The Unsolved Riddle, 1920).
It was the nurturing of this broader sense of cosmopolitan responsibility that Leacock believed would effectively counterbalance the growing preoccupation with self-interest and the regressive “creed and cult of self-development” (“The Devil and the Deep Sea,” 1910) that he saw as threatening the stability of the modern world.
Although today’s reader may find Leacock leaning at times toward the politically conservative, most obviously in his dismissive attitudes toward early feminist concerns and socialism (the latter of which he often equates with utopianism), it is his irony, wit, and optimism that endure and continue to endear him to readers.

Stephen Butler Leacock (1869-1944) , Canadian author, will long be remembered for his best-selling book Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town (1912) as well as the numerous awards and honours he received during his illustrious lifetime as author, professor, lecturer and humourist. Stephen Butler Leacock was born on 30 December 1869 at Swanmore, Hampshire, England, the third of eleven children to Peter Leacock and Agnes Emma ( ne Butler). The Leacock family did a lot of travelling in their early years but finally emigrated to Canada in 1876 and settled near the village of Sutton, Ontario on a one-hundred acre farm. It was a difficult time, with harsh winters and hard work. It was only two years later that Stephen's father Peter travelled to Manitoba, leaving his large family behind. Leacock enrolled at the University of Toronto in 1887, studying modern and classical languages and literature with such exceptional talent and focus that he finished two years' worth of courses in just one. He graduated from University College in 1891with a Bachelor of Arts degree. The 1890s heralded his early success as a humourist with articles published in various magazines such as the New York periodicals
