His poem "Owl and the Pussycat" became a children's classic, although serious critics place him with the romantic school of poetry. The youngest and 21st child of a stockbroker, he was forced to earn a living by drawing from the age of 15. While working for the London Zoo, 1832, he produced the "Illustrations of the Family of the Psittacidae," and met the earl of Derby, Edward Stanley, who engaged him to draw his menagerie at Knowsley Hall for four years. This is where he started his nonsense rhymes to entertain the earl's children and eventually brought him great popularity with the publication of "Book of Nonsense.") Lear's youthful drawing of a leopard has been compared to Blake's "Tyger" and his bird drawings compare favorably with Audubon's. Many consider his landscapes as being in a class with Turner's and his poetry as original as Tennyson's with the wit of Jane Austin. Lear's diaries reveal that he had his share of loneliness, moodiness and fussiness with a trace of depression. Prone to epileptic seizures, he had enough prior warning to "melt away" from company allowing himself the dignity of being defined through his work and friendships, rather than personal moods and sorrows. Some biographers hint that Lear might have been homosexual due to a suspicious-sounding childhood trauma. Due to it Lear was left with an enigmatic lifelong complaint against a cousin who "did the greatest evil done to me in life."

He was the son of a stockbroker, the youngest child of a poor family with twenty-one children. His older sister Anne tutored him at home. He had to start contributing to the family income at the age of fifteen. Lear was commissioned to make drawing of parrots at the Zoological Gardens. His early drawings of parrots lead him to a career with the London Zoological Society. The Illustrations of the Family of the Psittacidae was the first large- scale volume of colored drawings of parrots to appear in England. Published in 1832, the illustrations are considered the most precise and vivid of all ornithological drawings of the period. His work was noticed by the earl of Derby, who hired Lear to illustrate the animals of the earl's menagerie. For the earl's grandchildren, Lear wrote Book of Nonsense , a collection of poetry that was illustrated with humorous sketches. This book was published ten years later in 1846 and Lear is thus recognized as the inventor of the limerick.

During the daytime, Violet chiefly occupied herself in putting salt-water into the churn, while her three brothers churned it violently, in the hope that it would turn into butter, which it seldom, if ever did; and in the evening they all retired into the Tea-kettle, where they all managed to sleep very comfortably, while Pussy and the Quangle-Wangle managed the boat.

In the decade of the 1830s, Lear was the unofficial artist in residence at the London Zoo, illustrating dozens of natural history publications for others as well as his own spectacular monograph on parrots, Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots Just as he was achieving an international reputation for his scientific illustration, Lear abruptly terminated this part of his career in order to devote himself full-time to landscape painting and travel. Fortunately, his scientific illustrations endure. The Ewell Sale Stewart Library of The Academy of Natural Sciences owns copies of virtually every one of the dozens of now rare books that Edward Lear illustrated.
