Leary, Timothy
The Secret of History
Below is a world-flipper of a quote in Timothy Leary's Autobiography But first, some introductions... Timothy Leary - Harvard psychologist who kick-started the psychedelic 60s by going around the country "turning on" the intellectual elite in the hopes of passing chemical wisdom into the mainstream. Neal Cassady - inspiration for the Beat Movement, and friends with Jack Keroac, Ken Kesey, and Allen Ginsberg. You can read more about the Psychedelic 60s and more here December 1960, Leary invites Cassady to his house to play with drugs. They are chatting it up, and Leary, a novice drug user (compared to Cassady), is describing his challenges. Timothy Leary
said: We're doing our best. We've read everything that's been written in the last four thousand years on the subject.
Neal Cassady
responds in his habitual western accent: You're cracking me up, man. There are no books written by scientists about ecstasy and cosmic orgasms. it's oral history and poetry. The history books are about meaningless public events like wars and elections and revolutions.

Biography
American professor, guru of the 1960's drug culture who coined the phrase, "Turn on, tune in, drop out." Well ahead of his time, he was fired from Harvard for his controlled experiments with psychedelic drugs. Arrested 29 times, he was imprisoned in 1970 for two years and was eventually paroled in 1976. President Richard Nixon once called him "the most dangerous man in America." In 1940 Leary left his first collegiate venue, Jesuit-run Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA after just a year. The son of a U.S. Army captain, he decided to follow the family tradition by enrolling at West Point. In 1941, after 18 months, he left due to various infractions of the rules. In 1950 he earned a Ph.D. in psychology at UC Berkley. Leary questioned the accepted theories of personality and believed that what people called abnormal was really just an exaggeration of normal personality. He continued there as an assistant professor and served as director of psychological research at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Oakland. Leary's life was marked by tragedy and broken relationships. In 1955 his first of five wives, Marianne, committed suicide. In 1990, daughter Susan, 42, was found mentally unfit to stand trial for shooting her sleeping boyfriend. Later that year she used shoelaces to hang herself from the bars of her cell. His son Jack felt his father had deserted him at a critical time in his life and was not close to him.

Starseed
Transmitted from Folsom Prison
by Dr. Timothy Leary
"Kohoutek will have a pale blue and yellow tail stretching out for somewhere between 75,000,000 and 100,000,000 miles — the yellow portions of it in the shape of a scimitar. It will first be seen by the naked eye in mid-November and will look dull. But since it will be approaching the Sun at 250,000,000 miles an hour, it will brighten and from mid-December to Dec. 28 the peoples of the world will have the finest Christmas star ever."
How about that, Chump? Do you still believe everything out there "just happened by accident."
—From a "memo to a friend who is an atheist" in Bob Considine's September 16 column in the San Francisco The quoted paragraph is from a release by the American Museum, Hayden Planetarium. The illustration facing the title page is from a photograph taken by Jose Tamez of an oil painting by Dali-Ah.

THIS SIGNAL IS BEING TRANSMITTED from a cell in Folsom Prison, which is the Black Hole of American society. A Black Hole is a dense space with a heavy gravitational pull. Matter which falls into a Black Hole fades from view and disintegrates in the stress of gravity. Given sufficient time, its radiation becomes too feeble to be detected from without. Although the matter of the Black Hole cannot re-escape as matter, some of it may manage to escape in the form of feeble red radiation. Some cosmologists suggest that Black Holes are the link to another realization of matter. They may be passageways to another universe, just as the manholes of Paris lead to a world beneath the street. Well, the maximum security prison is a fine place from which to scan the universe. it's beyond pure, undiluted bad. As good as good can be.

  • Comments(0) Share ... RSS Text-Size: Jailed on narcotics charges in 1974, Leary began cooperating with FBI agents investigating his 1970 escape from a California prison. Aided by members of the radical Weather Underground, Leary was able to bust out of jail and, after hiding in a series of safe houses, get smuggled out of the country with the help of a fake passport and other bogus ID provided by the Weathermen. After eventually being extradited from Switzerland and returned to a U.S. jail cell, Leary decided, he told FBI agents, to cooperate because he not only wanted to be released, but he was suddenly desirous of a collaborative, intelligent, and honorable relationship with law enforcement. Though it appears Leary's snitching did not result in any criminal cases, that sound you hear is Abbie Hoffman turning over in his grave. Here are some documents from Leary's FBI file, including choic eexcerpts from interview transcripts:
