Introductory Notes Harper Lee’s cousin, Richard Williams, has asked the reclusive author when she’s going to come out with another book. “And she said, ‘Richard, when you’re at the top, there’s only one way to go’” (see reference by Pressley below).
For Harper Lee, “the top” is her novel To Kill a Mockingbird , which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 and was made into an Academy Award–winning film, starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, in 1962. Except for a couple of short magazine pieces, this single novel constitutes her entire literary output.
Nelle Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama, in 1926. After a year (1944-1945) at Huntington College in Montgomery, she went to the University of Alabama to study law. She remained at Alabama, including a year as an exchange student at Oxford University, from 1945 to 1949. She left the university six months before completing her law degree to go to New York City to become a writer.

(Nelle) Harper Lee (1926-) American writer, famous for her race relations novel TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. The book became an international bestseller and was adapted into screen in 1962. Lee was 34 when the work was published, and it has remained her only novel. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama. Her father was a former newspaper editor and proprietor, who had served as a state senator and practiced as a lawyer in Monroeville. Lee studied law at the University of Alabama from 1945 to 1949, and spent a year as an exchange student in Oxford University, Wellington Square. Six months before finishing her studies, she went to New York to pursue a literary career. During the 1950s, she worked as an airline reservation clerk with Eastern Air Lines and British Overseas Airways. In 1959 Lee accompanied Truman Capote to Holcombe, Kansas, as a research assistant for Capote's classic 'non-fiction' novel

      Biography of Harper Lee (1926-)
Study Guides and Essays by Harper Lee To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, to Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee. Harper Lee grew up in the small southwestern Alabama town of Monroeville. Her father, a former newspaper editor and proprietor, was a lawyer who also served on the state legislature (1926-38). As a child, Lee was a tomboy and a precocious reader, and she enjoyed the friendship of her schoolmate and neighbor, the young Truman Capote, who provided the basis of the character of Dill in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird Lee was only five years old in when, in April 1931 in the small Alabama town of Scottsboro, the first trials began with regard to the purported rapes of two white women by nine young black men. The defendants, who were nearly lynched before being brought to court, were not provided with the services of a lawyer until the first day of trial. Despite medical testimony that the women had not been raped, the all-white jury found the men guilty of the crime and sentenced all but the youngest, a twelve-year-old boy, to death. Six years of subsequent trials saw most of these convictions repealed and all but one of the men freed or paroled. The Scottsboro case left a deep impression on the young Lee, who would use it later as the rough basis for the events in To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee studied first at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama (1944-45), and then pursued a law degree at the University of Alabama (1945-49), spending one year abroad at Oxford University, England. She worked as a reservation clerk for Eastern Airlines in New York City until the late 1950s, when she resolved to devote herself to writing. Lee lived a frugal lifestyle, traveling between her cold-water-only apartment in New York to her family home in Alabama to care for her ailing father. In addition, she worked in Holcombe, Kansas, as a research assistant for Truman Capote's novel

    Biography
American author of the 1961 Pulitzer Prize novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." The novel was made into an Oscar-winning film the following year starring Gregory Peck and has since been translated into ten foreign languages with a 74th printing in 1974. Lee was the youngest of four children of Amasa Coleman Lee, a lawyer, and homemaker mother Frances Cunningham Finch. After attending Huntingdon College from 1944-1945, she studied law at the University of Alabama from 1945-1949, and spent one year at Oxford University. During the '50s she was employed as a reservation agent for Eastern Airlines in York City. Deciding to put all her energy into writing, Lee left her job with the airlines and moved into a cold-water flat with makeshift furniture. When her beloved father suddenly became ill, she divided her time between New York and Monroeville, a practice she still continues. In 1957, Lee submitted her completed manuscript to J.B. Lippincott Company. She was told that her novel consisted of a series of short stories that were strung together and was encouraged to rewrite it. After re-working the manuscript, two and a half years later "To Kill A Mockingbird" was finally published in 1960 and remains Lee's only published book. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Lee to the National Council for the Arts.
