Here is the Cross Reference Section of all of the Short Stories that are reviewed on my site. You can look up the authors alphabetically from the selections below. You will notice that some authors have their own page and others are lumped together. This is because I do not want to maintain a separate page for each author especially as I will eventually cover short stories by hundreds of different authors many of whom will be featured for just one or two items. In the case of authors for whom I have, or expect to have a number of story reviews, I have created separate pages. All sections: Authors A...E Authors F...L Authors M...R Authors S...Z

I'm used to freak kids, Conceived in a test-tube, Revised in a petri dish, For parents who believe Four arms are better than two, Or that red eyes Will be fashionable Any day now. There are always people Who make poor choices. But that's no reason To withdraw my support For the 30th amendment: Free to shape Our children, as we are free

Reviews of "Winter Shadows and Other Tales"
The Skeptic Tank, Review #81, by Jim Lee, Scavenger's Newsletter #215, January 2002
This review appears by the kind permission of Jim Lee Mary Soon Lee's first book, this collection reprints 16 stories published over the past decade, plus 4 brand new ones. There's plenty of high fantasy, several ghostly tales, some borderline SF/F. But genre is secondary here. In Lee's hands, such standard tropes as curses, time travel and the like provide a backdrop and move the plot, but the focus is on the people. And Lee's effortlessly convincing characterization brings her people to vibrant life. The reader cares about them, often intensely. Lee (no relation to your humble reviewer, if any care) introduces the book with an insightful essay that reveals, among other things, how she became a writeralmost by accident. From there it's on to fiction at once fantastic and utterly believablewritten with conviction and a steady, subtle hand. Love, sacrifice, betrayal, pain, regret and redemption figure strongly in her universe. Regardless of any supernatural or speculative trappings, Lee's best work is absolutely true in the deepest emotional sense and so many of these strike me as Lee at her best that it's impossible to pick a single favoriteor even 3 or 4. "Monstrosity" features a cursed woman, the old man who blunders into her life, unhurried but never slow pacing and a kind of quiet, dignified (dare I say mature?) love. Far more than a gender-flipped "Beauty and the Beast," this layered and nuanced piece proves deeply satisfying.

    we built towers together,

I watched you stretch high as your head,
    while the blocks wobbled
    and my heart wobbled
for love of you. The day I couldn't speak
    you brought me books
    that I couldn't read,
asked me questions that I couldn't answer, and I heard your voice, your words, which slip by me so lightly on ordinary days. The day I couldn't speak we made Jell-O, played with balls, laid out a feast on tiny plastic plates for all your toys, and, in between, you hugged me, fixing everything, as you do each day. This poem was first published in Main Street Rag and her poetry has also appeared in American Scholar, Cider Press Review and Rosebud.

Her story "Universal Grammar" will be in the April 97 issue of (on sale in March), and her previous story in , "Ebb Tide," is currently on the preliminary Nebula ballot. Ann lit a cigarette and slowly inhaled. The cheap tobacco smoke scraped her throat raw, but the kick of the nicotine unknotted her shoulder muscles. Ann leaned back in the chair, one eye on the clock. Five minutes to four, almost time to go home. Hell, if a call came through now, she'd ignore it. She took another drag on the cigarette, blew a smoke ring gently to the ceiling. The phone rang. Ann turned her back on the customer service screen, and watched the white curls of smoke instead. Two rings, three. "Priority call. Picking up automatically," the desk computer said. Shit. Ann stubbed out her cigarette. Bad enough that the computer could override her line; there was no need for it to sound smug. She forced a smile as the screen dissolved to show the customer. Her smile slipped into a grin before she managed to control it. Where had the man found that suit? It looked like a period prop for a movie, maybe even manufactured from real animal fur. Come to think of it, the man could have been a prop himself, metal-rimmed glasses pushed up onto his bald head. "Simoco Limited," she said. "How may I help you?"
