Noam Chomsky
1928 - Present
Noam Avram Chomsky was born on December 7, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents were William Chomsky, a Hebrew scholar and Elsie Simonofsky Chomsky. His parents first language, Yiddish, was forbidden in their home and Noam grew up reading Hebrew and later taught Hebrew classes. He first attended Oak Lane Country Day School and then later went to Central High School in Philadelphia. He entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1945, where he studied linguistics, mathematics, and philosophy, and in 1955, he earned his Ph. D. He spent four years as a Harvard Junior Fellow, doing doctoral research at Harvard University Massachusetts Institute of Technology offered him a position in 1955 and he became a full professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics in 1961. He was appointed Institute Professor in 1976 and has taught for over 50 years at MIT. Not only has Chomsky made major contributions to the study of linguistics, but his linguistics work has influenced the teaching of computer languages and mathematics. Some of the historical principles of linguistics that he learned early on from his father set the groundwork for his later theories. The modern spoken Hebrew language was the basis of his research on his Masters. Among his many accomplishments, his greatest contribution is considered to be his work on generative grammar, which developed from his interest in modern logic and mathematical foundations. He believed that children were born with certain fixed and innate grammatical principles that assisted in the understanding of language.

Bogen, Joseph E. Presented in part as the outgoing Presidential Address to the Los Angeles Society of Neurology and Psychiatry on 19 January 1983. Portions of this essay have appeared in the following: Benson DF and Zaidel E, eds. The Dual Brain , Guilford, NY, 1985. Also, Lepore F, Ptito M, Jasper HH, eds. Two Hemispheres, One Brain? Alan Liss, NY, 1986; and Trevarthen C, ed. Brain Circuits and Functions of Mind Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990.
Does an individual having two cerebral hemispheres have, in some important sense, two brains rather than only one? This "important sense" deserves to be made more explicit at the outset. It includes, I believe, the following: that whatever may be for neurologists the meaning of the psychological term "mind," the number of brains in an individual is the same as the number of minds. If this equivalence of numerosity were not agreed upon, we might well spend the rest of our time arguing that question as well as others, such as: What meanings are possible for the word "mind"? Without demeaning such perennial questions, I will take it for granted, at least for this paper, that what we can learn about mind also tells us about brain and vice versa. In other words, the mentalistic and physiologic are two different descriptions of the same underlying reality.

Leiber was best known for the heroic characters of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser that he created with Harry Otto Fischer. The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, diaries, photographs, and other materials. Identification: Quantity: 70 boxes; approx. 30 linear feet Repository: Special Collections, University of Houston Libraries
    Biographical Note
Fritz Reuter Leiber, Jr. was born in Chicago on December 24, 1910 to Shakespearean actors Fritz Leiber, Sr. and Virginia Bronson Leiber. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1932 with a degree in psychology and physiology, and, in 1936, married Jonquil Stephens, a British poet with similar interests in the supernatural. They had one son, Justin Leiber, in 1938. Several years after Jonquil's death in 1969, he married Margo Skinner. His employment throughout the years included editorial positions and teaching drama, yet Fritz Leiber primarily supported himself with his writing. Producing stories in the genres of fantasy, science, horror, and supernatural fiction from the mid 1930s until his death in 1992, Fritz Leiber won several prominent fantasy and science fiction awards such as the Hugo, the Nebula, and the World Fantasy Association Awards. Although he wrote numerous stories in variety of styles, Leiber is perhaps best known for the heroic Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser characters he created with his college friend, Harry Otto Fischer (1910-1986), and which he continued to embellish through a series of short stories and novels throughout his long writing career and correspondence with Fischer.

    Ethics of eating meat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article has been nominated to be checked for its neutrality . Discussion of this nomination can be found on the talk page (November 2009) Various types of meats. In many societies, controversy and debate have arisen over the ethics of eating animals. Ethical objections are generally divided into opposition to the act of killing in general, and opposition to certain agricultural practices surrounding the production of meat. Reasons for objecting to the practice of killing animals for consumption may include animal rights environmental ethics , or religious reasons. Some people, while not vegetarians , refuse to eat the flesh of certain animals due to cultural taboo , such as cats, dogs, horses, or rabbits. Others vocally support meat eating for scientific, nutritional and cultural reasons, including religious ones. Some meat eaters abstain from the meat of animals reared in particular ways, such as factory farms , or avoid certain meats, such as veal or foie gras . Some people follow vegetarian or vegan diets not because of moral concerns involving the production of meat and other animal products in general, but the treatment involving the raising and slaughter of animals.
