Amazon.com Fans of Fortress and Motherless Brooklyn may find this novel's levity too drastic a shift, but even though Lethem is having a great time here with wordplay, a motley cast, and Lucinda's sexual meanderings, You Don't Love Me Yet is anything but a simple entertainment. He plays with our notions of art and authorship, enjoying a bit of advanced cribbery himself as he experiments with Shakespearean antics and inexplicable love match-ups. At every turn, Lethem seems to be asking sticky questions: Can anyone create the consummate intersection of dream, desire, and reality that art (and great sex) embodies? Will it last, and should it? Can any one writer capture that moment with a few meager words? If they did, how long would it take for it to be reduced to meaningless slogan? Heidi Broadhead Book Description From the incomparable Jonathan Lethem, a raucous romantic farce that explores the paradoxes of love and art

ows of frames sat on glass shelves, clear lenses reflecting gray light from the Brooklyn avenue. Outside, rain fell. At the door a cardboard box waited for umbrellas. The carpet was pink and yellow, to the limits of the floor, to the tightly seamed glass cases. The empty shop was like a cartoonist's eyeball workshop, hundreds of bare outlines yearning for pupils, for voices. They fell short of expression themselves. The whole shop fell short. There was no radio. The white-coated opticians leaned on their glass counters, dreaming of their wives, of beautiful women who suddenly needed glasses. One of them moved into the rear of the shop and made a call. The other turned as the door chimed, two notes blurred momentarily in the rain's hiss. "You're back." "Damn fucking right I'm back." The black man wiped his feet just inside the door, though there wasn't a mat, then jogged forward into the shop. He wore a baseball cap, and his glasses. The optician didn't move. "You don't need to use language," he said. They'd sold him his glasses yesterday. One hundred dollars. He'd paid with cash, not out of a wallet.

The Edge of the Bed of Forever
by Jonathan Lethem and Angus MacDonald Strand knew his wife would soon notice how terribly old he was getting. It was only a matter of time. Lingering before his bathroom mirror, he catalogued the ravages. The yellow of his eyes, the white stubble growing up under, and out of, his nose, the saggy pouches of skin accumulating around his jaw. There was no mistaking it. He was pulling away from his wife, agewise. And soon it would be obvious to her. Using the time platform had been a dirty little secret from the beginning, but at the beginning he had had it under control. Now he was spending as much time in no-time with Angela as he was back here in realtime, with his wife. And it was turning him into an old man. He had no right to call himself forty-five anymore. He had lost track long before, but he was surely at least fifty by now, biologically. He opened the medicine cabinet and took out his bottle of dye disguised as a solution for remetabolizing corns and began combing it into his hair. A new irony occurred to him. His wife could save him. By noticing his aging, and accusing him of the adultery, she would put the stop to it that he couldn't himself. His lover, youthful, life-giving Angela, was killing him, and only his wife could save him. He finished, mussing his hair so it wouldn't look too combed. Downstairs his wife waited for him to join her in the large kitchen. He heard her. She was working already, piling the cotton shirts she and Strand would decorate with commercial logos today. All would be spotlessly clean, ready for the inking microbes they'd prepared the afternoon before. She would keep stacking them, silently reproachful, while he read his newsclod.

    GIRL IN LANDSCAPE
    by Jonathan Lethem
    Doubleday
280pp/$22.95/April 1998 Cover by David J. High Reviewed by Steven H Silver Jonathan Lethem has always drawn from disparate sources for his novels, from the Chandleresque Gun, With Occasional Music to the Lewis Carroll influenced As She Climbed Across the Table . His latest, Girl in Landscape , perhaps demonstrates best the far-ranging influences on his writing. At first glance, Girl in Landscape seems to be the most purely science fictional of Lethem's four novels. However, it quickly becomes apparent that Lethem is using the science fictional trappings in much the way Kurt Vonnegut used the them in such novels as The Sirens of Titan The novel begins in a future Brooklyn in which pollution has gotten so bad the residents must live indoors, reminiscent of Isaac Asimov's The Caves of Steel . In honor of their family's decision to leave earth for the Planet of the Archbuilders, Caitlin Marsh takes her three children to Coney Island to reminisce about the days when she was able to go their without the protective clothing her children must wear. The novel doesn't really pick up until the Marsh family arrives at the Planet of the Archbuilders. Lethem designs the planet so it is reminiscent of a John Ford western (most notably "The Searchers" [1956]). The Marshes have settled in a sparsely populated area on the verge of becoming a town. Although the "town" only consists of four families (only two of which are "traditional") and five individuals, the population runs the gamut from politicians to anthropologists to loners to drunkards: a microcosm in twenty people. In addition to the humans, the planet is settled by the Archbuilders, the remnants of a race which has fallen from its glory days who can be seen as Lethem's version of the the American Indian.

    20. Bold Type: Interview With Jonathan Lethem's Editor
featured on the Random House s web site, Bold Type.
    http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0397/lethem/interview.html
think that Jonathan's a very interesting writer because he pays homage to classical and contemporary pop culture influences, but not in a way that's cheap and easy. He doesn't just drop brand names into his prose," says Thomas, explaining his interest in the young author.
Lethem's third novel, As She Climbed Across the Table, is a strange and dazzling love story and is unlike any other you are likely to have read. "I think this new novel represents a great leap for him, both in terms of his technique, and in terms of realization of a novel, a fully realized novel," declares Thomas. "It reminds me aesthetically of one of my favorite pieces of music, John Coltrane's My Favorite Things. Coltrane takes a standard pop song, a rather banal pop song, and expands and plays with it, still maintaining faithfulness to the melody, but through his own genius makes it a singular piece of work."
"I think Jonathan achieves the same thing with several influences in As She Climbed Across the Table, most prominently and obviously Alice in Wonderland.
