Biography
British-American writer, a major contemporary poet with works that began to appear in journals early in WW II. She is a highly respected poet for her publications in "Poetry London" and "Poetry Quarterly." Her first book was published in 1946. Denise Levertov was the daughter of Paul Levertoff, a Jewish scholar who converted to Christianity and became an Anglican priest. Her mother, Beatrice Adelaide (Spooner-Jones) Levertoff was Welsh, and a descendant of Welsh mystic (and tailor) Angel Jones. Denise never attended school. She was educated by her mother at home until the age of about 13. She said of her early years, "As I did not go to school (ever, at all) I had time and solitude to begin working in poetry at an early age." From her mother she received her love of Nature and her ability to read aloud well. Her sister, Olga (1914-1964) introduced her to modern poetry, the Impressionists, theater, and many other things. During her teens, Denise tried to become a ballet dancer, then a painter. Later she became a hospital nurse in training. But always she was a poet. Her first book, "Double Image," was published in 1946.

The Secret
Two girls discover the secret of life in a sudden line of poetry. I who don't know the secret wrote the line. They told me (through a third person) they had found it but not what it was not even what line it was. No doubt by now, more than a week later, they have forgotten the secret, the line, the name of the poem. I love them for finding what I can't find, and for loving me for the line I wrote, and for forgetting it so that a thousand times, till death finds them, they may discover it again, in other lines in other happenings. And for wanting to know it, for assuming there is such a secret, yes, for that most of all.
Talking to Grief
Ah, Grief, I should not treat you like a homeless dog who comes to the back door for a crust, for a meatless bone. I should trust you.
I should coax you into the house and give you your own corner

Levertov, Denise
(b . Oct. 24, 1923, Ilford, Essex, Eng.), English-born American poet who wrote deceptively matter-of-fact verse. Educated entirely at home, Levertov became a civilian nurse during World War II, serving in London throughout the bombings. Her first volume of verse, The Double Image (1946), was not very successful. She settled in New York the next year with her husband and was naturalized in 1955. She credited the spare, clear, objective work of the poet William Carlos Williams with being the greatest assistance in the development of her own vital American style. Here and Now (1957) was quickly followed by Overland to the Islands (1958), and five more volumes appeared in the 1960s. She translated the Buddhist work In Praise of Krish na: Songs from the Bengali (1967; with Edward Dimock, Jr.). Relearning the Alphabet (1970) discloses her concern with social issues. Opposed to the war in Vietnam, she was active in the War Resisters League and edited for it the collection Out of the War Shadow In Footprints (1972) she reverted to the mystical tone of her earlier works. Levertov's later efforts included essays and prose, as in
