(Redirected from C.S. Lewis Jump to: navigation search Previous (C. L. Franklin) Next (C. V. Raman) Clive Staples Lewis (November 29, 1898 – November 22, 1963), known for his writings as C. S. Lewis and by his friends and associates as Jack , was a famous Irish author, novelist, and one of the great spokespersons for Christianity in the twentieth century. As a youth, the untimely death of his mother, the cruelty of his schoolmates and the traumatic events of World War I caused C. S. Lewis to question a God who would allow such horrible things to happen. In 1931, he reconverted to the Christianity of his youth. From that point onward, C. S. Lewis wrote for other people who suffered from the disbelief that had plagued his early life. Whether indirectly through children's novels or directly in apologetic works and radio broadcasts, he spent the latter part of his life helping others come closer to religion , and most especially to Jesus Christ . His writings continue to help people decipher their beliefs, and are today more popular than ever.

Lewis, Matthew G.
9 July 1775 - 10 May 1818
Like Mary Shelley , Lewis made a huge impact with his teenage (and only) novel The Monk , which more or less defined the far edge of sensational Gothicism when it was published in 1796. Indeed, the notoriety of the novel was such that Lewis was forever after known as "Monk" Lewis, and the fact he served as a Member of Parliament only heightened the shock value. Lewis went on to write a number of plays, poems, and translations, many of which featured Gothic themes and motifs. As a playwright Lewis was rather successful, his melodramatic flair finding an appreciate audience in the days of Romantic drama, although Lewis abandoned the theater when he inherited his family's West Indian sugar plantations.
This unattributed etching of Lewis (you can see what may well be the source by clicking on the "Portraits" link at left) served as the frontispiece to The Life and Correspondence of M. G. Lewis , London: Henry Colburn, 1839.

Lewis Carroll
by David Carroll
First Appeared in Burnt Toast#7
Let's forget all about sex and violence for a while, and just talk about Lewis Carroll, the man and his creations. Don't worry, we'll get back to the sex and violence later. Like his most famous creation, the man didn't actually exist, but was the pseudonym of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), a shy man prone to stutter, seemingly only comfortable in the presence of young girls, whom he loved and spent much of his life devoted to. And while it is his children's literature he is remembered for, he was known at the time for more then just this field. Among his talents were mathematics, invention (including a Nyctograph, a device to record, Braille-like, any thoughts during the night without getting out of bed), word and chess puzzles and had remarkable skill with the camera when the craft was in its infancy, having his work shown at London's annual Photographic Exhibition. He was a devout member of the Church of England, ordained a Deacon though seldom preaching because of his stammer. And he had an affinity for Tuesdays. As Martin Gardner describes him he is 'a fussy, prim, fastidious, cranky, kind, gentle bachelor whose life was sexless, uneventful and happy'.

Timeline Lewis Carroll is born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names into the Latin "Carolus Lodovicus" and then anglicizing it into "Lewis Carroll." He graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. Carroll remained there, lecturing on mathematics and writing treatises and guides for students The first recorded use of his pseudonym was when Dodgson submitted a parody to the magazine The Train. The editor of The Train, Edmund Yates, chose the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll" from a list of possible pen names submitted by Dodgson. Although he took deacon`s orders in 1861, Carroll was never ordained a priest, partly because he was afflicted with a stammer that made preaching difficult and partly, perhaps, because he had discovered other interests. Lewis Carroll is best known for ALICE`S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND . It is believed that this book was originally written for Alice Liddell, the child of the Dean of Christ Church college.
