Madeline Kneberg Lewis Kneberg Lewis' advice to young archaeologists "...try to find something original" (1992) Madeline Kneberg Lewis, born in Moline, Illinois, was most known for her archaeological endeavors in Tennessee. She showed talent in both music and art and at the age of 21, she went to Italy to explore her creative abilities. Reconsidering, she returned four years later to study nursing at Presbyterian Hospital. She continued studies at the University of Chicago where she was inspired to further her career in physical anthropology. Madeline had familial responsibilities and when the Works Progress Administration came along, she needed money. In 1933 one of the largest archaeological projects in the United States was created by the Tennessee Valley Authority to excavate hundreds of sites The funding came from the WPA. Thomas M.N. Lewis, director of TVA , hired her in 1938 to supervise the archaeological lab at the University of Tennessee.

Home Click on your browser's back button to return to the previous page Biography of Lewis Hine Lewis Wickes Hine was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1874. After graduating from High School, he worked at various jobs before enrolling at the University of Chicago in 1900. While at the University of Chicago, Hine met Frank E. Manny, Professor of Education at the State Normal School who had recently been appointed superintendent of the Ethical Culture School in New York. In 1901, at the invitation of Manning, Hine moved to New York City and accepted a position as an assistant teacher at the ECS. Hine began at this time to use a camera as an educational tool and to photograph school events. Hine also began to attend the School of Education at New York University. In 1904, Hine, newly married to Sara Ann Rich became involved in a project to photograph Ellis Island. Anti Immigrant sentiment was pervasive and Manny encouraged Hine to portray the newly arrived with the same dignity and respect as those immigrants who landed at Plymouth Rock. In 1908, the NCLC provided Hine with a monthly salary and assigned Hine to photograph child labor practices. For the next several years, Hine traveled extensively, photographing children in mines, factories, canneries, textile mills, street trades and assorted agricultural industries. Hine’s photographs alerted the public to the fact that child labor deprived children of childhood, health, education and a chance of a future. His work on this project was the driving force behind changing the publics attitude and was instrumental in the fight for stricter child labor laws.

Kings and Queens of Crime Essays on major Crime Writers Simon Brett on Monk Lewis There have been many "one-hit wonders" in the world of literature, but few whose first book was so successful that the title became its author's nickname for the rest of his life. Such, however, was the fate of "Monk" Lewis, as Simon Brett recounts. In May 1794, fresh from Oxford, Matthew Gregory Lewis started work as an attache at the British Embassy in The Hague, a position secured for him by his father, Deputy-Secretary at the War Office. But the 19 year old was much more interested in writing than diplomacy. On 23 September 1794, he wrote triumphantly to his adored mother, "What do you think of my having written, in the space of ten weeks, a romance of between three and four hundred pages octavo? I have even written out half of it fair. It is called The Monk, and I am myself so pleased with it, that, if the booksellers will not buy it, I shall publish it myself. " Matthew Lewis didn't have to resort to self-publishing. The official first edition of The Monk was published anonymously on Saturday 12 March 1796. The public responded immediately. As Sir Walter Scott, a friend of the author, wrote in 1830, "The Monk was so highly popular that it seemed to create an epoch in our literature." But "popular" has never necessarily meant "approved of". An early review in the European Magazine hinted at the storms that lay ahead. "This singular composition, which has neither originality, morals, nor probability to recommend it, has excited, and will still continue to excite, the curiosity of the public. Such is the irresistible energy of genius."

The Lewis Grizzard Museum Moreland, Georgia, USA Grizzard bike ride returning to Moreland (Article- March 7, 2008) During Lewis Grizzard's lifetime, Moreland nourished him. He spent his childhood there, enjoying the camaraderie of Cureton-Cole Store, learning his multiplication tables at Moreland School and attending Sunday School at Moreland Methodist Church. The warmth of the small Southern town remained a part of his life as Grizzard grew from boy to man. He made the daily trek from Moreland to Newnan High School and then packed his suitcase for Athens and the University of Georgia. When he became a syndicated columnist and the author of several books of Southern humor, his best work often reflected on the Moreland of his childhood. Since Grizzard's death in 1994, a museum has been established in his memory in Moreland. Lewis Grizzard Museum in Moreland, is operated by the Lewis Grizzard Memorial Trust.
