Lewis, Matthew G.
9 July 1775 - 10 May 1818
Like Mary Shelley , Lewis made a huge impact with his teenage (and only) novel The Monk , which more or less defined the far edge of sensational Gothicism when it was published in 1796. Indeed, the notoriety of the novel was such that Lewis was forever after known as "Monk" Lewis, and the fact he served as a Member of Parliament only heightened the shock value. Lewis went on to write a number of plays, poems, and translations, many of which featured Gothic themes and motifs. As a playwright Lewis was rather successful, his melodramatic flair finding an appreciate audience in the days of Romantic drama, although Lewis abandoned the theater when he inherited his family's West Indian sugar plantations.
This unattributed etching of Lewis (you can see what may well be the source by clicking on the "Portraits" link at left) served as the frontispiece to The Life and Correspondence of M. G. Lewis , London: Henry Colburn, 1839.

11. Simon Brett On Monk Lewis
The popular success of The Monk.

Kings and Queens of Crime Essays on major Crime Writers Simon Brett on Monk Lewis There have been many "one-hit wonders" in the world of literature, but few whose first book was so successful that the title became its author's nickname for the rest of his life. Such, however, was the fate of "Monk" Lewis, as Simon Brett recounts. In May 1794, fresh from Oxford, Matthew Gregory Lewis started work as an attache at the British Embassy in The Hague, a position secured for him by his father, Deputy-Secretary at the War Office. But the 19 year old was much more interested in writing than diplomacy. On 23 September 1794, he wrote triumphantly to his adored mother, "What do you think of my having written, in the space of ten weeks, a romance of between three and four hundred pages octavo? I have even written out half of it fair. It is called The Monk, and I am myself so pleased with it, that, if the booksellers will not buy it, I shall publish it myself. " Matthew Lewis didn't have to resort to self-publishing. The official first edition of The Monk was published anonymously on Saturday 12 March 1796. The public responded immediately. As Sir Walter Scott, a friend of the author, wrote in 1830, "The Monk was so highly popular that it seemed to create an epoch in our literature." But "popular" has never necessarily meant "approved of". An early review in the European Magazine hinted at the storms that lay ahead. "This singular composition, which has neither originality, morals, nor probability to recommend it, has excited, and will still continue to excite, the curiosity of the public. Such is the irresistible energy of genius."

    From LoveToKnow 1911
MATTHEW GREGORY LEWIS (1775-1818), English romance-writer and dramatist, often referred to as " Monk " Lewis, was born in London on the 9th of July 1775. He was educated for a diplomatic career at Westminster school and at Christ Church, Oxford , spending most of his vacations abroad in the study of modern languages; and in 1794 he proceeded to the Hague as attache to the British embassy . His stay there lasted only a few months, but was marked by the composition, in ten weeks, of his romance Ambrosio, or the Monk, which was published in the summer of the following year. It immediately achieved celebrity; but some passages it contained were of such a nature that about a year after its appearance an injunction to restrain its sale was moved for and a rule nisi obtained. Lewis published a second edition from which he had expunged, as he thought, all the objectionable passages, but the work still remains of such a character as almost to justify the severe language in which Byron in English Bards and Scotch Reviewers addresses "Wonder-working Lewis, Monk or

September 23rd, 1794 We really do not remember to have read a more interesting production. The stronger passions are finely delineated and exemplified in the progress of artful temptation working on self-sufficient pride, superstition, and lasciviousness. The author has availed himself of a German tradition which furnishes an episodical incident, awful, but improbable. The whole is very skilfully managed, and reflects high credit on the judgement and imagination of the writer. Some beautiful little ballads are interspersed, which indicate no common poetical talents. The Monthly Mirror
