Li Po
 Li Po  701 -762
"You ask me why I dwell in the green mountain;
I smile and make no reply for my heart is free of care.
As the peach-blossom flows down stream
and is gone into the unknown,
I have a world apart that is not among men." - Li Po
Life of Li Po
Li Po was probably the greatest Chinese poets of pre-modern times. It is generally agreed that he and Tu Fu raised the shih form to its highest level of power and expressiveness; later poets at times approached but never surpassed them. Li Po's distinction lies in the fact that he brought an unparalleled grace and eloquence to his treament of the traditional themes, a flow and grandeur that lift his work far above mere immitation of the past. Another characteristic of his poetry is the air of playfulness, hyperbole and outright fantasy that infuses much of it. Li Po grew up in Szechwan in western China and later traveled extensively in the eastern and central regions. Around 742 he gained recognition from emperor Hsuan-tsung (Xuan Zong) and was appointed to a post in the Hanlin Academy, but a few years later he was exiled from the capital as a result of slanders. He fled south at the time of the rebellion in 755 and entered the service of Prince Yung. The Prince's downfall involved Li Po in a second exile, though he was eventually pardoned and resumed his life of wandering.

Li Po
I lived from 701-762. I was from China, and am in the Asian category. Li Po was considered one of the greatest poets of his time along with Tu Fu(Du Fu). Both these great poets lived during the T'ang Dynasty in China. Li Po was also called as Li Bai or Li Pai. He was born in Jiangyou, Sichuan province, Western China in the year 701. Some believe that he was born elsewhere and moved to Jianyou when he was five. He was a romantic and a wanderer. He traveled extensively in the eastern and central parts of China. His poems are graceful, eloquent and romantic. He is known for his exquisite imagery and Taoist philosophy found in his poems. He added flavor to traditional themes with his grandeur and made them exceptional.
Li Po loved drinking wine and wrote a lot of poems about the joy of drinking. He seems to have had a liking for the moon and wrote many poems on Moon. He also wrote poems on nature, friendship, solitude and the passage of time. Legend has it that he drowned when he tried to catch the reflection of the moon in the river. He died in the year 762 in Dangtu which is the modern day Anhui province. It is believed that he wrote many thousands of poems during his extensive travels but only about 1,100 poems are extant at present. His first wife left him and took his two children with her and he is believed to have married two more times.
In the year 742 his poems caught the attention of the emperor Xuanzong himself and he was given a post in Hanlin Academy which catered to the poetic needs of the emperor. However per chance one of his poems was found to be a satire on the emperor and he was exiled after about two years in the academy and he had to flee the capital. Some time around the year 755 he was once again exiled due to his involvement in a rebellion by one of the imperial family members (prince Yung) but was later pardoned and he resumed his wandering.

Li Po (701 - 762)
Renowned as the Poet Immortal, Li Po was among the most well-respected poets in China's literary history. Approximately 1,100 poems of his remain today. The western world was introduced to Li Po's works through the very liberal translations of Japanese versions of his poems made by Ezra Pound. Li Po is best known for the extravagant imagination and striking Taoist imagery in his poetry, as well as for his great love for liquor. Like Du Fu, he spent much of his life travelling, although in his case it was because his wealth allowed him to, rather than because his poverty forced him. He is said to have drowned in the Yangtze River, having fallen from his boat while drunkenly trying to embrace (the reflection of) the moon. Li Po was the son of a rich merchant; his birthplace is uncertain, but one candidate is Suiye in Central Asia (near modern day Tokmak, Kyrgyzstan). His family moved to Jiangyou, near modern Chengdu in Sichuan province, when he was 5 years old. He was influenced by Confucian and Taoist thought, but ultimately his family heritage did not provide him with much opportunity in the aristocratic Tang dynasty. Though he expressed the wish to become an official, he did not sit for the Chinese civil service examination. Instead, beginning at age 25, he travelled around China, affecting a wild and free persona very much contrary to the prevailing ideas of a proper Confucian gentleman. This portrayal fascinated the aristocrats and common people alike and he was introduced to the Emperor Xuan Zong around 742.

Introduction
Li Po (about 701-762 CE) was a native of Sezchaun, China. While still in his teens, he retired to mountains in the north of the province to live with a religious recluse by the name of Tunyen-tzu. The two of them were said to keep strange birds as pets. Li Po later traveled down the Yangtze to Yun-meng, a town north of the river and Tung-ting Lake, where he married. From then on his occupation became that of a wandering poet. Throughout his life he produced an abundance of poems on many different subjectsparticularly nature, wine, friendship, solitude, and the passage of time. He has since become recognized by many as the greatest of a highly talented array of Tang poets. He stayed for a few years in various places, traveled extensively, and became for a time one of the Six Idlers of the Bamboo Valley , who celebrated wine and song in the mountains of Chu-lai. All this did not provide a satisfactory existence for his first wife, who left him with their two children. He appears to have married three times.

She Spins Silk
by Li Po (701-762) Far up river in Szechuan,
waters rise as spring winds roar. How can I dare to meet her now,
to brave the dangerous gorge? The grass grows green in the valley below
where silk worms silently spin. Her hands work threads that never end,
dawn to dusk when the cuckoo sings.
Selected Poems
Alone and Drinking Under the Moon
Amongst the flowers I
am alone with my pot of wine
drinking by myself; then lifting
my cup I asked the moon
to drink with me, its reflection
and mine in the wine cup, just
the three of us; then I sigh for the moon cannot drink, and my shadow goes emptily along with me never saying a word; with no other friends here, I can but use these two for company; in the time of happiness, I too must be happy with all around me; I sit and sing and it is as if the moon accompanies me; then if I dance, it is my shadow that dances along with me; while still not drunk, I am glad to make the moon and my shadow into friends, but then when I have drunk too much, we all part; yet these are
