Li Po (sometimes written as Li Tai-Po or Li Pai or Li Bai) is considered one of the greatest of the premodern Chinese poets. Li Po was raised in Szechwan in western China, and traveled widely throughout China in his life. In his 40s, he was appointed to a high academy position by the emperor in recognition of his work, but he was later exiled for political reasons. He later worked in the service of a southern prince who rose up in rebellion. When that prince lost his struggle, Li Po was exiled a second time, but eventually pardoned. Li Po's poetry is particularly known for its elegance. It suggests a certain serene poise in relationship to the world and the quiet mind observing it.

Biography
Works
Most of Li Po's works are lost, but almost 2000 poems were collected in 1080. Li Po is best known for his pieces describing voyages through imaginary landscapes. Li Po prefers older poetic forms such as songs or ballads. Some themes expressed in Li Po's works are the sorrows of those separated by the demands of duty and the relief found in wine. He also wrote about friendship, solitude, the passage of time, and the joys of nature. Some of his works are "Saying Goodbye to Meng-Hao Ran," "Leaving a Friend," "Bitter Love," "River Trip from Bai Di," "The River Merchant's Wife," "Down the Mountain," "Li Po Alone Drinking," and many more.

    The long wind, across thousands upon thousands of miles,

Heaven and earth are different here than in the world of men. Translated by Andrew Haley Li Po or Li Bai (李白) the Banished Immortal, celebrated Tang Dynasty poet, was born in 701 in present day Kyrgyzstan to Chinese exiles. He achieved great acclaim before his death, despite a life of itinerant wandering. One of the Eight Immortals of Wine, he was a legendary drinker and is said to have drowned drunk in the Yangtze trying to embrace the reflection of the moon. He was returning to his childhood home in Sichuan Province after a thirty-five year absence. He was 61. Publicado por Zone Magazine en

    Introduction to Li Po, the fu (rhapsody) style, and the Great Hunt Rhapsody
    Li Po Li Po lived during the period in Chinese history that is known as the "High Tang" (A.D. 705-805). During this century, the arts, especially poetry, flourished. This was due in part to the fact that in 680 the imperial government again added the composition of poetry to the "chin-shih" examination. The "chin-shih" was a series of examinations which were ostensibly available to people of all levels of society. Doing well on these exams qualified one for a position in the bureaucracy. Naturally enough, with the inclusion of poetic composition on these examinations, interest in poetry became more wide-spread. Writing poetry became an interest of persons of every class, helping to infuse new vitality into the traditional court poetry of the capital at Ch'ang-an and opening up a spirit of creative freedom. In his personal life, he was known as a rebel and a free spirit, an image he enjoyed and furthered through riotous living and blatant disregard for social norms of the times. Anecdotes abound which deal with his escapades such as appearing drunk at imperial functions and wasting fortunes on wild parties. He was known as an eccentric and a romantic, and these tendencies found expression in his poetry as well as his lifestyle. In his personal life as well as in his poetry, he followed the example of Ssu-ma Hsiang-ju, another Southerner noted for his love of wine, women, and bawdy adventures.

    Nefarious War Li Po (c. 750)
    Translated from the Chinese by Shigeyoshi Obata
    Last year we fought by the head-stream of the So-Kan,
    This year we are fighting on the Tsung-ho road.
    We have washed our armor in the waves of the Chiao-chi lake,
    The long, long war goes on ten thousand miles from home.
    Our three armies are worn and grown old.
    The barbarian does man-slaughter for plowing;
    On his yellow sand-plains nothing has been seen but blanched skulls and bones.
    Where the Chin emperor built the walls against the Tartars,
    There the defenders of Han are burning beacon fires. The beacon fires burn and never go out. In the battlefield men grapple each other and die; The horses of the vanquished utter lamentable cries to heaven
