The Structure of Livy - Ab Urbe Condita
By N.S. Gill Titus Livius (Livy) was born c. 59 B.C. and died in A.D. 17 at Patavium, in northern Italy. In about 29 B.C., while living in Rome, Livy started his magnum opus, Ab Urbe Condita , a history of Rome from its foundation, written in 142 books. Little else is known about Livy, although it is reported that while he does not appear to have held public office, Augustus considered him a Republican and Suetonius thought he had encouraged the Emperor Claudius in his historical studies. Even if we don't know much about Livy's life, we have a generous sample of his writing (35 books: I-X, XXI-XLV) and an even more generous supply of scholarship about it. From Book XLV onward, we don't have Livy's words, but we still know the content because other ancient writers made summaries of Livy's Ab Urbe Condita . A third century Egyptian papyrus summarizes Books XXXVII-XL and XLVIII-LV, and a fourth century summary, known as the

Syracuse A t the beginning of the third century BC , the Mediterranean basin was controlled by the Carthaginians in the west and the Greeks in the east. The Romans controlled only a small area around Rome, but were poised to march. They locked horns with Carthage in the First Punic War (264-241 BC ), during which they greatly expanded their territory, although they did not capture the city of Carthage itself. The Greek city of Syracuse, where Archimedes lived, initially supported Carthage. But early in the war Rome forced a treaty of alliance from Syracuse's king, Hiero II , that called for Syracuse to pay tribute and provide grain to the Romans. T he Romans and Carthaginians renewed their antagonisms in 218 BC , the beginning of the Second Punic War. Under Hannibal, Carthage gained the first round of victories, culminating in Hannibal's crossing of the Alps into Italy (218 BC ) and his defeat of the Romans at Cannae (216 BC ). Hannibal's successes in Italy helped convince many Syracusans that they were allied with the wrong side.

    Livy (2)
Livy ( Titus Livius or Livy (59 BCE - 17 CE): Roman historian, author of the authorized version of the history of the Roman republic.
Scope of the History of Rome
The History of Rome from its foundation was a very, very large work. All in all, there were 142 books. Of course, these were not real books in our sense, but scrolls, the length of which is identical to about 65 pages in a modern pocket book. The total size of Livy's work is, therefore, the equivalent of some 9,250 pages or 31 pocket books. He wrote all this in about 45 years, which means that every year, he published three-and-a-fifth scrolls or 205 pages. Even with a computer and a word processor, this is impressive. It is clear that Livy had to make use of earlier histories and did not have the opportunity to do additional research in archives. We will discuss the consequences of this lack of originality below What does Livy have to tell? Unfortunately, his work was too large to survive. A century after his death, an Epitome was published by Publius Annius Florus , and many people preferred this and similar abridged editions. As a consequence, few people cared about the originals. We still possess the books 1-10 and 21-45 and this is not likely to change (although surprise finds in the Egyptian desert or the Vesuvius area can never be completely be ruled out). Fortunately, the contents of the remainder (11-20 and 46-142) are known from a fourth-century excerpt, the

    Mamertine Prison
The so-called "Mamertine Prison", beneath the church of S. Giuseppe dei Falegnami, via di Marforio, Rome , is generally accepted as being identical with "the prison ... in the middle of the city, overlooking the forum", mentioned by Livy (I, xxxiii). It consists of two chambers, one above the other. The lower, known as the Tullianum, was probably built originally as a cistern , whence its name, which is derived from the archaic Latin word tullius, Servius Tullius is erroneous . The Tullianum is a circular chamber, partly excavated from the rock, and partly built of tufa blocks, each layer of masonry projecting a little over that immediately below so as to form a conical vault. When the upper chamber was constructed, the top of the cone was probably cut off, and the present roof, consisting of a flat arch of tufa blocks, substituted. The upper chamber is an irregular quadrilateral, and contains an inscription recording a restoration made in A.D.

Our October 'Book of the Month' is a fifteenth-century illuminated manuscript. The text is a classical work by the Roman writer Livy who began writing his History of Rome over two thousand years ago. This manuscript copy is unusual because, at this time, humanist copies of Livy were not normally illustrated. Moreover, the illustrations in this volume are exceptionally beautiful.
Book One: detail of initial letter showing Battle of the River Trebia
    (folio 1r The author:

Titus Livius (Livy) was born in Patavium (modern Padua) in the north of Italy in 59BC. He died in AD17. He began writing his History of Rome when he was about 30 years old, in around 29BC.
Unfortunately, the majority of Livy's writing has not survived. What remains, including summaries written by later authors, indicates that the History was an extensive work. It spanned nearly 800 years from the foundation of the city of Rome (753BC) to the death of Cicero (43BC) with a summary covering events down to 9BC.

The project of writing the history of Rome down to the present day was not a new one. Historical research and writing had flourished at Rome for 200 years, since the first Roman historian Quintus Fabius Pictor bc , there developed a widespread interest in ancient ceremonies, family genealogies, religious customs, and the like. This interest found expression in a number of scholarly works:
