Lowell, Amy
(b. Feb. 9, 1874, Brookline, Mass., U.S.d. May 12, 1925, Brookline), American critic, lecturer, and a leading poet of the Imagist school. A member of the prominent Lowell family of Boston (her brothers were A. Lawrence Lowell and Percival Lowell), she was educated by her mother and in private schools and traveled widely. At 28 she began to devote herself seriously to poetry, but she published nothing until 1910. Her first volume, A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass (1912), was succeeded by Sword Blades and Poppy Seed (1914), which included her first poems in free verse and what she called "polyphonic prose." A Critical Fable (1922), an imitation of her kinsman James Russell Lowell's Fable for Critics, was published anonymously and stirred widespread speculation until she revealed her authorship. Later Lowell's vivid and powerful personality and her independence and zest made her conspicuous, as did her scorn of convention in such defiant gestures as smoking cigars. Having been displaced by her as the leader of the Imagists, Ezra Pound promptly restyled them the "Amygists" in tribute to her domineering qualities. A bold experimenter in form and technique, she remained conservative at the core, retaining conventional verse forms and in her last years severing connections with all radical schools of poetry. "Lilacs" and "Patterns" are among her most frequently anthologized poems. Her other works include Six French Poets

    Lowell, Amy
Lowell, Amy, , American poet, biographer, and critic, b. Brookline, Mass., privately educated; sister of Percival Lowell and Abbott Lawrence Lowell. In 1912 she published A Dome of Many-Colored Glass, a volume of conventional verse. The next year she went to England, where she met Ezra Pound and became identified with the imagists . After Pound abandoned the group, she became its leader and champion, publishing a three-volume anthology entitled Some Imagist Poets (1915, 1916, 1917). Lowell's own poetry is particularly notable for its rendering of sensuous images. Her experiments with polyphonic prose, a free-verse form that combines prose and poetry, are considered unsuccessful. Among her volumes of poetry are Sword Blades and Poppy Seed Men, Women, and Ghosts Can Grande's Castle What's o'Clock (1925; Pulitzer Prize)
