Read about my Newbery Awards
Anastasia was born in 1979, at the age of ten. She's been around ever since, and she's only thirteen now. I never get tired of writing about her and her family. Katherine Krupnik, her mother, reminds me of myself. ANASTASIA KRUPNIK Anastasia's tenth year has some good things, like falling in love and really getting to know her grandmother, and some bad things, like finding out about an impending baby brother. ANASTASIA AGAIN! Twelve-year-old Anastasia is horrified at her family's decision to move from their city apartment to a house in the suburbs. ANASTASIA AT YOUR SERVICE Chronically short of cash, twelve-year-old Anastasia looks for a job and finds more than she bargained for. ANASTASIA, ASK YOUR ANALYST Anastasia's seventh-grade science project becomes almost more than she can handle, but brother Sam, age three, and a bust of Freud nobly aid her. ANASTASIA ON HER OWN When her mother is called out of town, Anastasia and her father set about to prove that running a house is actually easier than it seems.

Introduction
This supplemental unit was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project, funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP).
The Giver presents a "today" world of sameness: no yesterdays (historical background), no differentiated human rights, no opportunity to exercise any freedoms. Since our world is not like that, this unit is designed in the hope that, upon completion, students will have a greater appreciation of the freedoms they have in the present and future and the importance of the past in the direction of that future. During these lessons, students will explore our history via the Library of Congress and create a chart personalizing the history of 3 days. They will then move on to the world by investigating differences in rights and freedoms globally, collecting and analyzing their data and writing a summary of their findings. They will also make use of their individual freedom to choose by completing an interest inventory, exploring careers linked to their interest and talents, and preparing a outline for their future. The culminating activity will grant them some insight into Lois Lowry's conclusion of the book and will require them to write their own ending.

They settled in Maine, where she returned to college and received her degree from the University of Southern Maine. Lois Lowry fulfilled a childhood dream when she began writing in the mid-1970's. Now divorced, she lives in West Cambridge with her dog, Bandit, and spends weekends in her 19th century farmhouse in New Hampshire.
