  • ASIN: Amazon.com Roger L. Conover, the editor of this excellent posthumous collection, has done the poetry-reading world quite a favor. Many of these poems originally appeared in long-defunct and nearly forgotten avant-garde journals, and have never before been available in book form. Mina Loy was a favorite of the other modernists (Ezra Pound thought she was as important a writer as William Carlos Williams and Marianne Moore), and the energy in her writing is truly impressive. Here's a taste, from "Mexican Desert": "The belching ghost-wail of the locomotive / trailing her rattling wooden tail / into the jazz-band sunset ... " Included here, too, are Loy's essays about poetry, futurism, and feminism. Book Description Mina Loy's technique and subjects - prostitution, menstruation, destitution, and suicide - shock even some modernists and she vanished from the poetry scene as dramatically as she had appeared on it. Roger Conover has resuced the key texts from the pages of forgotten publications, and has included all of the futurist and feminist satires, poems from Loy's Paris and New York periods, and the complete cycle of "Love Songs," as well as previously unknown texts and detailed notes.

    7. Myrna Loy - Montana Marvel
A salute to the classic actress.
    http://www.meredy.com/myrnaloy/
Myrna Loy was born Myrna Williams on August 2, 1905 in Radersburg, Montana, the daughter of a cattle baron who died when she was twelve. Her family moved to Los Angeles and she was educated at the Westlake School for Girls. She had some stage experience performing in shows at Grauman's Theatre. She was discovered by Mrs. Rudolph Valentino and danced in chorus lines before making her screen debut in Pretty Ladies [1925]. She was often chosen to play exotic femme fatales early in her career because her auburn hair photographed much darker and her features, especially her eyes, suggested her as Oriental. She worked steadily in silent films, including The Jazz Singer Loy's weak, high pitched voice made her transition to talkies difficult. She was often cast as Oriental or Mexican vamps in her early sound films. Her performance in Penthouse [1933] convinced the MGM brass to cast her opposite William Powell in the first of the six "Thin Man" features, 1934's The Thin Man in which she portrayed Nora Charles. The film was a huge success and catapaulted her to Hollywood stardom. She became Hollywood's "perfect" wife, bright, witty and humorous. Some of Loy's best appearances include Manhattan Melodrama [1934], the film John Dillinger "just had to see" much to his regret, I'm sure

"Lewis seeks in Mere Christianity to help us see the religion with fresh eyes, as a radical faith whose adherents might be likened to an underground group gathering in a war zone, a place where evil seems to have the upper hand, to hear messages of hope from the other side." Kathleen Norris, from the Foreword One of the most popular and beloved introductions to Christian faith ever written, Mere Christianity has sold millions of copies worldwide. The book brings together Lewis's legendary broadcast talks of the war years, talks in which he set out simply to "explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times."

Late Modernism: Politics, Fiction, and the Arts between the World Wars Tyrus Miller February 1999 Paperback Book Description Tyrus Miller breaks new ground in this study of early twentieth-century literary and artistic culture. Whereas modernism studies have generally concentrated on the vital early phases of the modernist revolt, Miller focuses on the turbulent later years of the 1920s and 1930s, tracking the dissolution of modernism in the interwar years.

In 1921 Ezra Pound wrote to Marianne Moore : "... is there anyone in America except you, Bill [ William Carlos Williams ] and Mina Loy who can write anything of interest in verse?" But for decades, the avant-garde poet Mina Loy was virtually invisible next to many of her fellow modernists. While she makes colorful appearances in the biographies of many other writers and artists, including those of Djuna Barnes, Marcel Duchamp, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Marianne Moore , and Gertrude Stein , Mina Loy had no biography of her own until 1996, when Becoming Modern: The Life of Mina Loy The Lost Lunar Baedeker Mina Loy was born in London on December 27, 1882. Myrna Loy
    The Early Years
When David Franklin Williams was travelling by train in early 1905, he went through a small station called 'Myrna'. He loved the name and when a daughter was born to him and his wife Della Mae on August 2nd 1905 they named her Myrna Adele Williams. Myrna's Scottish and Welsh grandmothers were both strong, pioneering women who made comfortable lives for their children. Myrna's father went into politics at the age of 23, and a few years later into real estate and banking. Myrna's mother was very artistic and studied music at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. Myrna spent her early years on a ranch and in the town of Helena, Montana, which was also the home of Gary Cooper.
1916, in self choreographed dance based on 'The Blue Bird'
A visit to the theatre to see Maeterlinck's 'The Blue Bird', dressed in a blue silk dress and matching feather fan, left a lasting impression on Myrna and she decided against becoming a nun or a nurse and dreamed of going on the stage from then on.
In November 1918, Myrna was devastated by the death of her father and felt she should take on responsibility for her mother and her brother David. Shortly after her husband's death, Della Mae moved the family to Culver City, California where she held musical and artistic soirees. Myrna and her friends staged dance recitals on the front lawn. As well as normal schooling, she also took additional music and ballet lessons which she loved. However, when the very nice and proper ladies who ran the school she attended discovered that, horror of horrors, one of their delicate pupils wanted to go on the stage, they were horrified. Myrna left the school in disgust and enrolled at Venice High School - a school which later named its annual speech and drama awards 'Myrnas'.
