Her mother Julia Bryan was English, and her father Sigmund Löwry was a Hungarian. Upon leaving school at age seventeen, she moved to Munich and studied painting for two years. When she returned to London, she continued to study painting, once having Augustus John as a teacher. During her studies, she became familiar with the latest advanced theories in Europe, such as that of Nietzsche, Bergson, Freud, as well as teachings of the East. She moved to Paris, France with Stephen Haweis who studied with her at the Académie Colarossi. The couple married in 1903. Loy is first cited using her new last name in 1904, when she exhibited six watercolor paintings at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. Loy and Haweis had their first child, Oda, in 1904. Oda died on her first birthday. In 1907, Loy and Haweis moved to Florence, Italy where they lived more or less separate lives, becoming estranged. Despite drifting apart, they had two more children: Joella in 1907 and Giles in 1909. It was during this time that Loy became part of the Futurists community, having a sexual relationship with their leader Filippo Marinetti. While attending gatherings held at Mabel Dodge's Medici villa, she also networked with expatriates from Manhattan. Among this group were journalist and communist John Reed, as well as novelist and critic Carl Van Vechten. Vechten would eventually become Loy's agent. In early World War I, Loy would serve in an army hospital.

Another way to tell is to divide by 2, and if there is no remainder, then it is divisible by 2. This test depends heavily upon the base we are using; we use base-10. If the base is 2, then a number is divisible by 2 if it ends in (1101010 is divisible by 2 (10 in base 2)). If the base is odd, then divisibility by 2 is more difficult to determine. Here are divisibility tests for the first few integers (2 through 11): Even (last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8). Sum of digits is divisible by 3. Last two digits divisible by 4 (even0, even4, even8, odd2, odd6). Last digit is or 5. Divisible by 2 and 3 (even, and sum of digits is divisible by 3). I will skip this for now. Last three digits divisible by 8. Sum of digits is divisible by 9. Last digit is 0. The difference between the sum of the odd numbered digits (1st, 3rd, 5th...) and the sum of the even numbered digits (2nd, 4th...) is divisible by 11. There are some interesting things in this list. Some of the tests deal with just a few of the digits of a number. If we want to determine if a 30-digit number is divisible by 4, we can ignore the first 28 digits. The last two digits are all that matter. Other tests deal with the entire number. These involve numbers which are relatively prime to 10. All of the above tests are relatively easy to prove. Her "forgotten" poems were published in 1996 in the collection, The Lost Lunar Baedeker , a biography has recently been published, and no fewer than two book-length criticisms are at press as this site is being constructed. In 1921 Ezra Pound wrote to Marianne Moore: " [...] is there anyone in America except you, Bill [William Carlos Williams] and Mina Loy who can write anything of interest in verse?" But Mina Loy has, until recently, not been mentioned in the same breath with luminaries like Ezra Pound or William Carlos Williams. She has been read by recent scholars as a lost literary jewel. There were and are hurdles in studying Mina Loy. Her politics were hazy; her poetry was inconsistent in value and message; through linguistic choices she was extraordinarily difficult to read and remains so. There are times, however, when Loy's poetry becomes both luminous and dense, where modernism becomes Modernism. To elucidate her as a person and poet through the postmodern medium of a webpage may indeed have delighted her. Her art survives her and is freshly anthologized. She may have been caught up in the trend of expanding the canon, but she has become more than modern, more than postmodern; she has become an artist unencumbered by historical alliances or salon affiliations. Virginia Kouidis deserves a great deal of credit in keeping Mina Loy alive in academe. Her 1980 text started the academic Loy canon and I am much indebted to her work.
