Although the work has been generally known through most of history as the "Pharsalia", modern scholarship tends to agree that this was not Lucan's choice for a title. PREPARER'S NOTES: Lucan's "Pharsalia" (or, "Civil War", as many scholars now prefer to call it) was written approximately a century after the events it chronicles took place. Lucan was born into a prominent Roman family (Seneca the Elder was his grandfather, and Seneca the Younger his uncle), and seems to have befriended the young Emperor Nero at an early age. He was for several years a poet of some prominence in the Emperor's court, and it is during this period that the "Civil War"/"Pharsalia" was probably begun. However, Nero and Lucan's friendship evidently soured, and in A.D. 65 Lucan joined Calpurnius Piso's conspiracy to overthrow Nero. When the conspiracy was discovered, Lucan was given the option of suicide or death; he chose suicide, and recited several lines of his poetry while he died (possibly Book III, l. 700-712).

He was eldest son of Richard, second Earl of Lucan and his wife Elizabeth who was the third daughter of Henry, third Earl of Fauconberg of Newborough and the divorced wife of Bernard Edward Howard who became the fifteenth Duke of Norfolk. Bingham was educated at Westminster School and became an ensign in the 6th Regiment of Foot on 29 August 1816. He moved to the 3rd Foot Guards on 24 December 1818 and went on half-pay the next day. On 20 January 1820 he became a lieutenant in the 8th Foot. He obtained a company in the 74th foot on 16 May 1822, again went on half-pay, and on 20 June moved to the 1st Life Guards. On 1 December 1825 he was appointed as a Major to the 17th Lancers and succeeded to the command of the regiment as Lieutenant-Colonel on 9 November 1826. On 14 April 1837 he went on half-pay once more. Although the regiment remained in England, Bingham was attached to the Russian staff and was present at the Balkans campaign of 1828. In 1829 he married Anne, seventh daughter of Robert, sixth earl of Cardigan, by whom he had two sons and four daughters; she died on 2 April 1877. His mother was Acilia; his father, Marcus Annaeus Mela, had amassed great wealth as imperial procurator for the provinces. From a memoir which is generally attributed to Suetonius we learn that Lucan was taken to Rome at the age of eight months and displayed remarkable precocity. One of his instructors was the Stoic philosopher, Cornutus, the friend and teacher of Persius . He was studying at Athens when Nero recalled him to Rome and made him quaestor . These friendly relations did not last long. Lucan is said to have defeated Nero in a public poetical contest; Nero forbade him to recite in public, and the poet's indignation made him an accomplice in the conspiracy of Piso .
