  • ASIN: Amazon.com Writing in the Georgia Review, Peter Stitt described Thomas Lux's writing as a "mingling of humor and sincerity," capable of both "ferocious anger and deep tenderness." These seemingly irreconcilable traits marry in Lux's best poems, which you'll find in this collection. Consider, for instance, "Travelling Exhibit of Torture Instruments." Lux is overcome by a wave of reactions to the instruments: he is awed by their genius, their effectiveness; he is obviously bitter about the depths of human cruelty; he is darkly amused by the absurdity of it all; he is bone-crushingly tired and sad at the seeming futility of life. The ending of the poem might contain any, or all of these reactions: "It seems most times men did this or that, / so terrible to him or her, / it was because God willed it so. / Or, at least, they thought He did." Lux is eclectic and brilliant, with a sharp mind and a good ear. Book Description One of the New York Public Library's 25 "Books to Remember" in 1997 Lux comments on the absurd, the pathetic, and the commonplace in our culture, writing with compassion as well as satire. He is "singular among his peers in his ability to convey with a deceptive lightness the paradoxes of human emotion," says Publishers Weekly, and Robert Hass, in the Washington Post Book World, takes special note of Lux's "bitter wit, the kind of irony that comes with a quick, impatient intelligence."

“The most important elements in making a poem are diligence, the craft, imagination, passion, and you need to be a little nuts. Read everything, dig in for the long haul, work on your stamina, love poetry, love it hard.” — Thomas Lux What is your sense of the contemporary American poetry scene?

B OOK R EVIEW Daniela Gioseffi Thomas Lux is the author of Split Horizon Sunday Half Promised Land The Drowned River and a volume of New and Selected Poems . He is the winner of numerous writing awards, including the Kingsley Tufts Award. Mr. Lux divides his time between the Metropolitan New York and Boston areas. page 1 of 2 J.M. Spalding : Your father was a milkman. Can you talk a little bit about what he was like? Thomas Lux : He's eighty-four years old, and he spent most of his working life as a milkman driving around in small towns in Iowa and Massachusetts delivering milk. I grew up on the dairy farm. It was my uncle's and my grandfather's farm; we lived on the farm and worked on it, and my father's job was to deliver the milk. The one outstanding thing about his job was that there was a period, probably from the early fifties until the later sixties, where he worked seventeen years in a row, 355 days a year. His milk route was divided into two sections: two weeks, three days each, and then on Sundays he delivered milk to a couple of stores. So he'd go out on the job on Sunday for only an hour or two. JM : What was his reaction to your becoming a poet?

If the best things in life are free, then why does an education cost money?
In most of the high schools here in Northern FL, you can't pass until you purchase something from the school. And yes, it hurts your grade. For example, you get an F and 4 points taken away if you're not wearing the school's most recent gym uniform, which costs 20 dollars. Summer reading for advanced classes? All of the books total up to around 25 bucks. Lab fee, 10 bucks. Tool belt, reflective vest, construction boots, safe goggles, and safety glasses add up to an additional 50 dollars if you buy cheap. 105 dollars to pass your freshman year, another 105 your sophomore year, junior year, etc. In order for me to graduate from high school, I must spend 420 dollars.
Which of course, my family can't afford to spend on school things other than folders, pencil, and paper. I'm not angry at my parents, not by a long shot, I understand we're not destined to spend our golden years in a luxury mansion with a heated pool. I'm 100% accustomed to and happy with the house we live in now, but I am angry at the school system, it's total bull shit that you can't pass without paying up 400 dollars.
