LYTTELTON, GEORGE, first BARON LYTTELTON: Observations on .the Conversion and Apostleship of St. Paul (London, 1747; new ed., 1879), which Dr. Johnson characterized as "a treatise to which infidelity has never bin able to fabricate a special answer"; Dialogues of the Dead (1760; 4th ed., enlarged, 1765; new ed., 1889); and The History of the Life of Henry II. (4 vols., .1767; 3d ed., 6 vols., 1769-73), a work of much careful research, which has, however, been superseded. His verse, which is inferior to his prose, was chiefly included in Poems (Glasgow, 1773), and in his Poetical Works (London, 1785). His nephew, G. E. Ayscough, collected his Works (London, 1774; 3d. ed., 3 vols., 1776), including both verse and prose. Sir Robert Phillimore edited his Memoirs and Correspondence (2 vols., 1845). BIBLIOGRAPHY: An excellent list of authorities is given at the end of the sketch in DNB xxxiv. 369-374, and a Life is found in A. Chalmers, Works of the English Poets , vol. xiv., London, 1810. Consult also: E. S. Creasy, Memoirs of Celebrated Etonians

ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: Book Description Customer Reviews: Entertaining correspondence Entertaining correspondence between publisher and literary biographer, Rupert Hart-Davis, and his old Eton English master, George Lyttelton. This is a selection of letters between the two men from the originally published six volumes in the 1970s. At that time, the correspondence was hailed as a great civilized work, but this was probably heaping too much praise on it. The work was later spoofed in Craig Brown's Marsh Marlowe Letters. Many of the letters contain interesting comments on writers which reflected their great love of literature. The letters also contain gossip about friends and comments about famous figures. This was an enjoyable read, but it is recommended that the letters be "dipped" into periodically rather than reading them straight through. Delicious!

person by Stealth Munchkin Sun Oct 14 2001 at 22:04:02 At 79 years old at the time of writing (2001 - I haven't been able to find a birthdate on the web) Humphrey Lyttelton is one of the last great living legends of the British trad jazz boom. The trad jazz boom was a curious affair in which British teenagers of the 50s became enamoured with the Dixieland music of the 1920s, and propelled many British musicians such as Lyttelton, George Melly Chris Barber and Acker Bilk to fame for a brief time. Lyttelton, while a traditionalist, is an exemplary jazz trumpeter, and recorded at least one minor classic, the often-covered Bad Penny Blues . This track was also the inspiration (ie they ripped it off totally) for the Beatles Lady Madonna George Martin recently did a TV series for the BBC about music, and as a finish to the first episode, to show the universality of music, he put together a montage of musicians from around the world playing along with this track. (The track also was the inspiration for a Beatles work-in-progress called Bad Finger Blues which became With A Little Help From My Friends and gave Badfinger their name).
