Biography of George MacDonald
George MacDonald - (1824-1905), Scottish novelist, clergyman and author
George Macdonald was born at Huntly, in the western part of Aberdeenshire on 10 December, 1824, the son of George Macdonald, farmer, and Helen MacKay. He was educated in country schools where Gaelic myths and Old Testament stories abounded. He then went on to Aberdeen University in the early 1840's obtaining awards in Moral Philosophy and Sciences. Next he studied for the Congregationalist ministry at Highbury College, London. In 1850 he was made pastor at Arundel, West Sussex, England. MacDonald resigned however after three years of not living up to the congregational authorities’ expectations for more dogmatic sermons and being accused of heresy. Rejecting his Calvinist upbringing and doctrine of predestination, he came to believe in the divine presence but not divine providence and felt that everyone was capable of redemption. George MacDonald married Louisa Powell in 1851 and they had six sons and five daughters together. One of their sons, Greville Macdonald would later become a writer himself and author a biography of his father. After a stay in Algiers to gain his health back MacDonald returned to England to tutor and write to provide for his ever-growing family and preach freelance when time permitted. Despite his successful career as a published writer he was continually forced to rely on the charity of his friends. Lady Byron was one such patron who assisted him until her death in 1860 as well as John Ruskin. MacDonald was mentor to C.S. Lewis; formed a strong friendship with Mark Twain after a tumultuous start and G. K. Chesterton, Henry Longfellow, and Walt Whitman were also counted among his friends. Some of his early poetry was

MACDONALD, George Oxley PERSONALIA Name: MacDonald, George Oxley Date of birth: Unknown Nationality: Canadian MILITARY CROSS (MC) Rank: Lieutenant Unit: No.8 Platoon, "A" Company, The Highland Light Infantry of Canada, 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division Action: Recommendation:
On 24 March 1945, Lieutenant George Oxley MacDonald was Platoon Commander in 8 platoon "A" Company, The Highland Light Infantry of Canada. The Highland Light Infantry of Canada was ordered to capture Speldrop, Germany, a strongly held nodal point blocking the expansion of the 51 Highland Division bridgehead North of the Rhine. "A" Company, was attacking the eastern half of the village which was strongly held by the enemy, who had machine gun posts sited in at least three buildings.
Lieutenant George Oxley MacDonald's platoon was ordered to attack in daylight, under covering fire of a carrier section.
Lieutenant George Oxley MacDonald led his platoon across 200 yards of open ground and successfully assaulted the first enemy positions although two more enemy machine gun posts beyond the objective and to the flank subjected the platoon to a withering fire. All NCO's in the platoon became casualties, but Lieutenant George Oxley MacDonald personally organized the consolidation of the objective and encouraged his men to hold the buildings, through it was discovered that at least two enemy tanks were active in the immediate area.
As a result of his courage and determination, the platoon held the buildings and successfully contained the enemy machine gun posts, enabling another platoon to get into a position to clear them. This courageous and brilliant action largely contributed to the success of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada's attack.

George Macdonald (1824-1905), Scottish novelist, clergyman and author of children's stories was admired by many of his peers for his tender spirituality through his graceful poems and fantastical verse. They rank high among the classics of juvenile literature. In his George MacDonald: An Anthology (1947) C. S. Lewis states that while reading a copy of MacDonald's Phantastes "a few hours later," through inspiration of the gentle Christian's words "I knew I had crossed a great frontier.".... "I know hardly any other writer who seems closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ himself." W.H. Auden and J. R. R. Tolkien also admired his efforts. Phantastes was to become a definitive work of MacDonald's career. Through his writing, peppered with the Doric Dialect, he asserted that there was a God and art and the expression of creativity of spirit brought one closer to Him. Other successful titles were

Description
Held to be George MacDonald's Masterpiece. Lilith is equal if not superior to the best of Poe," the great 20th-century poet W.H. Auden said of this novel, but the comparison only begins to touch on the richness, density, and wonder of this late 19th-century adult fantasy novel. First published in 1895 (inhabiting a universe with the early Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, and Oscar Wildenot to mention Thomas Hardy), this is the story of the aptly named Mr. Vane, his magical house, and the journeys into another world into which it leads him. Meeting up with one mystery after another, including Adam and Eve themselves, he slowly but surely explores the mystery of the human fall from grace, and of our redemption. Instructed into the ways of seeing the deeper realities of this worldseeing, in a sense, by the light of the spiritthe reader and Mr. Vane both sense that MacDonald writes from his own deep experience of radiance, from a bliss so profound that death's darkness itself is utterly eclipsed in its light.

Brief Biography Works by Kingsley Secondary Works by Author ... Secondary Works by Date George MacDonald Vol. 24, No. 3 (Fall 1999): 119-129.

Makman discusses Kingsley's treatment of the child in The Water-Babies, as well as that of Lewis Carroll in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, in her examination of MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind . While the latter work, she declares, presents the child as the new toy-child, depicting, after the cessation of child-labor, the gradual development of the notion that children are essentially toys, Kingsley's novel has a different orientation. "But while Kingsley emphasizes the mysterious nature of the play-world and its inhabitants, MacDonald focuses more on the mysterious nature of the child who can enter that world" (122).
