  • "The one man who should never attempt an explanation of a poem is its author. If the poem can be improved by it's author's explanations it never should have been published, and if the poem cannot be improved by its author's explanations the explanations are scarcely worth reading." "Once you permit those who are convinced of their own superior rightness to censor and silence and suppress those who hold contrary opinions, just at that moment the citadel has been surrendered. For the American citadel is a man. Not man in general. Not man in the abstract. Not the majority of men. But man. That man. His worth. His uniqueness." "It is not in the world of ideas that life is lived. Life is lived for better or worse in life, and to a man in life, his life can be no more absurd than it can be the opposite of absurd, whatever that opposite may be."

From Library Journal No matter how inspired an actor's reading of poetry might be, there's simply no substitute for hearing a poet read his or her own work. Even if the rendition itself is far from optimal, we hear the cadences, the emotion, and the line breaks exactly as the poem was intended. Since the early 1950s, Caedmon has been the unrivaled leader in spoken-word records and tapes. Though many of these performances are unfortunately out of print now, these three CDs give a taste of things past and, hopefully, to come. And with all but six of these 35 poets now dead, this is one of the few places we can hear the voices of William Butler Yeats, Gertrude Stein, Carl Sandburg, W.H. Auden, Conrad Aiken, Marianne Moore, Stephen Spender, Robert Graves, Edith Sitwell, Wallace Stevens, and the like. T.S. Eliot reads "The... MacLeish, Archibald
(b . May 7, 1892, Glencoe, Ill., U.S.d. April 20, 1982, Boston), U.S. poet, playwright, teacher, and public official, whose concern for liberal democracy figured in much of his work, although his most memorable lyrics are of a more private nature. Educated at Yale, after three years as an attorney in Boston, MacLeish went to France in 1923 to perfect his poetic craft. The verse he published during his expatriate years The Happy Marriage The Pot of Earth Streets in the Moon (1926), and The Hamlet of A. MacLeish (1928)shows the fashionable influence of Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot. During this period he wrote his frequently anthologized poem "Ars Poetica" (1926; "The Art of Poetry"). After returning to the United States in 1928, he published New Found Land (1930), which reveals the simple lyric eloquence that is the persistent MacLeish note. It includes one of his best-known poems, "You, Andrew Marvell." In the 1930s MacLeish became increasingly concerned about the menace of fascism. Conquistador (1932), about the conquest and exploitation of Mexico, was the first of his "public" poems. Other poems were collected in

The Book of Job and J.B.
Faith vs. Reason

by Gary Sloan (e-mail: GSloan@liberator.net ) [July 1st, 2003] Job is the quintessential man of faith. No matter how unjust, wayward, negligent, cruel, or sanguinary God might seem, Job resolutely accedes to his inscrutable will: Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him. Though the Book of Job belongs to an ancient genre called wisdom literature, it sanctions a moral order repugnant to human reason and justice. For divine sport, an innocent man is scourged. When he seeks a reason for the punishment, he is chastised. Instead of divulging the reason, God flaunts his omnipotence. According to the Old Testament, Job was spotless. As the Lord himself says, There is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil. Job is blessed with ten God-fearing children and a dutiful wife. He is also spacious in possessions: He has seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses, and very many servants. Satan, an angelic agent in the heavenly court, ventures that Job remains steadfast only because he has never been visited with affliction. Put forth thy hand and touch all that he has, Satan tells the Lord, and he will curse thee to thy face. The Lord forthwith looses Satan on the innocent Job: Behold, all that he has is in your power.
