Maistre, Joseph de u u key , French writer and diplomat. Born in Savoy, he was Sardinian ambassador at St. Petersburg from 1803 to 1817. A passionate Roman Catholic and royalist, he was master of a rigidly logical doctrine and the possessor of a great store of knowledge. These qualities, combined with a fine ability in writing French prose, made him perhaps the most powerful literary enemy of 18th-century rationalism, in which he delighted to detect logical weakness and shallowness. His principal works were Du pape [on the pope] (1819) and [discussions in St. Petersburg] (1821). They develop his idea that the world should be one, ruled absolutely by the pope as the spiritual ruler, with no temporal ruler having an independent authority. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

    Joseph-Marie, Comte de Maistre
French philosophical writer, b. at , in Savoy , in 1753, when Savoy did not belong to France ; d. at Turin , 26 Feb., 1821. His family , which was of French origin, had settled in Savoy a century earlier, and had attained a high position, his father being president of the Senate. Joseph , the eldest of ten children, was a pupil of the Jesuits , who, like his parents inspired him with an intense love of religion and detestation of the eighteenth-century philosophical rationalism , which he always resolutely opposed. In 1774 he entered the magistracy; in 1780 he was assistant fiscal advocate general; in 1788 he was appointed senator, being then thirt-five years old. Four years later, he was forced to fly before the invading French , and discharged for four years at Lausanne a confidential mission for his sovereign, the King of Sardinia . That monarch having lost the capital of his kingdom , de Maistre lived in poverty at Venice , but on the restoration of the king, went to Sardinia as keeper of the great seal (1799) and, three years later, to

Jump to: navigation search Maistre, Joseph De (1753-1821): Savoyard/French, Philosopher. Joseph-Marie, Comte de Maistre, was the most prominent anti-Enlightenment thinker of his time, denouncing French philosophers such as Voltaire, François-Marie Arouet de and Diderot, Denis and promoting reactionary political causes. De Maistre was born on 1 April 1753 at Chambéry, the capital of Savoy before it became part of France. Although de Maistre wrote in French, he never sought to become a French citizen. After a Jesuit education culminating in a law degree, de Maistre entered the Savoy Senate which his father had headed. Fleeing the French Revolution, de Maistre served the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia as a diplomat and regent in such locales as Lausanne, St. Petersburg, and Sardinia for over twenty years, during which time he never saw his wife and children. De Maistre held membership in the Masonic Lodge, which encouraged him to combine mysticism with his Catholicism. He gained notoriety from his paradoxical analysis of the French Revolution. While denouncing the revolution’s goals, he declared the Reign of Terror an act of divine intervention, a providential punishment upon the French people for their indulgence in what he perceived as the evil Enlightenment principles of secularism and egalitarianism. Only from such a cataclysm, he reasoned, could France be purged and a proper restoration achieved.

The Divine Origins of Constitutions, 1810
Although Liberalism dominated in the 19th century, conservatism also had its theorists. The French nobleman Joseph de Maistre (1754-1821) emphasized the importance of religious ideas for the philosophy and politics of conservatism. In this essay, de Maistre addresses the question of constitutions; in 1819, in another essay, he insists on the role of the pope in preserving international stability.
From Joseph de Maistre. Essay on the Generative Principle of Political Constitutions (1810
The more we examine the influence of human agency in the formation of political constitutions, the greater will be our conviction that it enters there only in a manner infinitely subordinate, or as a simple instrument; and I do not believe there remains the least doubt of the incontestable truth of the following propositions: - 1. That the fundamental principles of political constitutions exist before all written law. 2. That a constitutional law is, and can only be, the development or sanction of an unwritten pre-existing right.
