Heinrich Mann (1871-1950) German writer, the elder brother of Thomas Mann . Heinrich Mann's attacks on militarism, nationalism, and the authoritarian social structure of German society, led to his exile in 1933. Whereas Thomas Mann was influenced by the Russian novelists of the 19th century, especially Leo Tolstoy, and drew international attention to German prose with his works, the francophile Heinrich never gained the fame of his brother and was considered more of a Leftist social critic. (from Professor Unrat Mann studied at a private preparatory school until 1889, and then worked as an apprentice to a bookseller in Dresden and as a publisher in Berlin (1891-92). After contractig tuberculosis, he spent some time in a sanatorium in Switzerland. The inheritance Mann received after the death of his father in 1891, allowed him to start his literary career. His first novel, IN EINER FAMILIE, appeared in 1893. In 1894 he moved to Munich, where he was the editor of

Heinrich Marschner Although his work has been generally neglected in the 20th century, Heinrich Marschner was a leading figure in German Opera in the period between Weber and Wagner, and wrote twenty-three operas and singspiels. He was born in Zittau, in 1795, and although studied law at the University of Leipzig, spent a considerable time developing his love of music. His father was a Horndrechsler , a craftsman who made items of horn or ivory, but was a man who also had an abiding interest in music, and allowed his son the liberty to develop his considerable talent. , based on a Thuringian legend, a magic opera in the then currently popular style, but following Weber's example in using folk narrative material. In 1817, marschner married, but became a widower within months, his wife dying of gangrene. Throughout his life, he was married three more times. Another opera, , had some success thanks to Weber, who saw to its production in Dresden, where Marschner settled in 1821, without immediate employment. The first theatre commission Marschner undertook in Dresden was the composition of incidental music for Kleist's play

(b Mann was the elder brother of Thomas Mann. He entered publishing, but, after the death (1891) of his father, a prosperous grain merchant, he became financially independent and lived in Berlin, spending long periods abroad, particularly in France. His early novels portray the decadence of high society ( Im Schlaraffenland In the Land of Cockaigne ]), and his later books deal with the greed for wealth, position, and power in William's Germany. Mann's merciless portrait of a tyrannical provincial schoolmaster, Professor Unrat Small Town Tyrant ), became widely known through its film version Der blaue Engel The Blue Angel ). His Kaiserreich trilogyconsisting of Die Armen The Poor Der Untertan The Patrioteer ); and Der Kopf The Chief )carries even further his indictment of the social types produced by the authoritarian state. These novels were accompanied by essays attacking the arrogance of authority and the subservience of the subjects. A lighter work of this period is Die kleine Stadt The Little Town After 1918 Mann became a prominent spokesman for radical democracy and published volumes of political essays

Heinrich [Henricus] Isaac [Ysaac, Isaak], [Arrigo il Tedesco]
(c.1445-1517)
Franco-Flemish composer. Although the majority of his professional life was spent in Italy, particularly Florence, his influence was greatest in Germanic lands, where he lived intermittently from 1497, when he became court Composer to Maximilian I. Of his students, the most notable was Ludwig Senfl His long association with Italy began when he entered the service of the Medici in Florence around 1485 as a singer in the Cantori di S. Giovanni, a group that supplied polyphonic music for the cathedral and other local churches. His work for Maximilian I, from 1497 until his death, did not require continuous residence at the court but allowed stays of considerable length in various German cities, in northern Italy, and in Florence. Nevertheless, his position as imperial court composer and the many pieces he wrote for the Hofkapelle brought the Netherlandish style of music to German-speaking areas. Among his works are about 40 Mass Ordinaries, half cyclic (in the Netherlandish tradition), half based on liturgically appropriate plainsong melodies (in the German tradition); almost 100 cycles of the Proper of the Mass (following Germanic liturgical custom; most published posthumously in the 3-volume Choralis constantinus ); over fifty independent motets; and nearly 100 secular songs, including French chansons, a few Italian

Mann, Heinrich

Web www.custom-essay.net Like his more famous younger brother Thomas Mann , Heinrich Mann all his life accompanied his creative writing with the writing of essays. But unlike Thomas, Heinrich divided his interests roughly equally between literary-cultural essays and essays in which not only is a political viewpoint presented, but politics becomes the central theme. While Thomas remained firmly planted in the Germanic world, and found his materials primarily in the traditions of Weimar classicism ( Goethe, Schiller ), Romanticism, and the 19th century, Heinrich Mann's interests were cosmopolitan, oriented toward Western Europe, and especially toward France as the greatest exponent of Enlightenment and the liberal, later also socialist tradition. It is essential to understand this background when considering much of his essay output. A second, even more crucial precondition for understanding these writings is an acquaintance with German history. Mann was an astute observer of sociopolitical as well as cultural and intellectual developments, a fearless polemicist, and a tireless activist. Over the span of his career, he moved from moderately conservative middle-class opinions to a strong commitment to democracy and various forms of socialism, even communism.

40. Mass Settings Of Heinrich Isaac
Biography and overview of his liturgical works including various combinations of unison and polyphony.
http://web.bsu.edu/jcarter2/Isaac.htm
Mass Settings of Heinrich Isaac (c.1450-1517) © Dr. Jeffrey Carter Flemish composer Heinrich Isaac, one of the most gifted, versatile, and influential of Renaissance era composers, was born circa 1450 in Flanders. The first definitive record of his life and travels exists in Innsbruck in 1484 as he was traveling to Florence . His first principal employer was Lorenzo de' Medici of Florence, and Isaac maintained close ties with Florence the Medici family his entire life. He sang in "Cantori di S. Giovanni" at the cathedral, in addition to composing masses, motets, and Italian songs. In April 1497 Isaac became court composer for the Hapsburg Emperor Maximilian I, who was then settled in northern Italy. Isaac adopted the liturgical and musical customs of his employer, but imbued the German style with his Netherlands skill. His position with the Hofkappele seems to have allowed him freedom to travel and work elsewhere instead of requiring full-time residence; Isaac has connections to Constance, Innsbruck, Ferrare, Augsburg, Nuremburg, and Torgau, among other cities. Most of Isaac's music was written for his two principal employers, and for other patrons and churches. Isaac was awarded a pension by the city of Florence in 1514, this at the behest of Pope Leo X, a Medici family member. He spent his last few years in Florence; records vaguely indicate a diplomatic capacity for Maximilian. He died in March 1517, leaving compositions of extraordinary range and high quality, and esteemed as well for his character.
