Mann, Heinrich
German, 1871–1950
Like his more famous younger brother Thomas Mann, Heinrich Mann all his life accompanied his creative writing with the writing of essays. But unlike Thomas, Heinrich divided his interests roughly equally between literary-cultural essays and essays in which not only is a political viewpoint presented, but politics becomes the central theme. While Thomas remained firmly planted in the Germanic world, and found his materials primarily in the traditions of Weimar classicism (Goethe, Schiller), Romanticism, and the 19th century, Heinrich Mann’s interests were cosmopolitan, oriented toward Western Europe, and especially toward France as the greatest exponent of Enlightenment and the liberal, later also socialist tradition. It is essential to understand this background when considering much of his essay output.
A second, even more crucial precondition for understanding these writings is an acquaintance with German history. Mann was an astute observer of sociopolitical as well as cultural and intellectual developments, a fearless polemicist, and a tireless activist.

HEINRICH ISAAC (1450-1517) Writer Information Even though Heinrich Isaac was considered one of the greatest composers in Germany during his lifetime, he was not German, but from the Netherlands. Born around 1450, his compositions reflected styles from different countries. He also wrote a variety of music which included sacred songs, secular songs, masses, motets, psalms, introits and instrumental music. Isaac was organist and choirmaster of the Church of San Giovanni, Florence. From 1477 to 1493, he was organist and master of the Medici Chapel under Lorenzo de Medici. While in this position he taught Lorenzo's sons, one of whom later became Pope Leo X. In 1497 he became court composer to Emperor Maximilian I in Vienna and Innsbruck. He went to Florence when he was old, sick and without any means. Isaac died there in 1517. The original manuscript of his religious drama, San Giovanni e San Paolo , 1488, is now at Oxford University. His main sacred work was Choralis Constantinus . It contained musical settings of the Propers for the entire church year. Gustav Reese in Music of the Renaissance

"Art is always a good hiding-place, not for dynamite, but for intellectual explosives and social time bombs. Why would there otherwise have been the various Indices? And precisely in their despised and often even despicable beauty and lack of transparency lies the best hiding-place for the barb that brings about the sudden jerk or the sudden recognition." (from Nobel Lecture Heinrich Böll was born in Cologne. His father was a cabinetmaker and sculptor, whose ancestors had fled from England to escape the persecution of Roman Catholics. Böll started to write poetry and short stories in his youth. In the 1930s, he was one of the few boys in his school who did not join the Hitler Youth movement. However, his elder brother, Alois, joined the movement to keep his father’s business afloat. Böll graduated from a high school in 1937 with a certificate which had two errors: h´Böll's birth date was incorrect and his choice of career – "book trade" was altered by the school principal. Böll was drafted into the compulsory work program. "... my unconquerable (and still unconquered) aversion to the Nazis was not revolt," Böll later wrote, "

The Nobel Prize in Literature 1972
This year's winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature made his debut in 1949. A selective bibliography from January 1972 on works by, and about, lists some forty volumes from his own hand, disregarding reprints and new editions. Last in line comes his most grandly conceived work - and that not only in size - the novel published last year, Gruppenbild mit Dame
It is not, however, chiefly this capacity for continuous variation that is meant when the

Heinrich Seidel
