Biography
German writer, the author of novels, plays and essays. Mann won the Nobel Prize for literature for "Buddenbrooks," based on his family, in 1929. Throughout his career, Mann was respected by critics and popular with the reading public. He had the ability to turn personal biography into literature. His novel, "The Blood of the Walsungs" was based on the lives of his wife's family. Mann was inspired to write by the encouragement of his elder brother, Heinrich, who became a successful novelist in his own right. Mann left Germany during the rise of Nazism and in 1938 moved to the U.S. becoming a naturalized citizen in 1944. Thomas grew up in a wealthy merchant family in Lubeck, Germany. His father was a grain merchant and city senator. His mother was a pianist and a planter's daughter from German-Brazilian parentage. As a boy, he loved to day dream and visit the sea. He hated school and failed twice. In 1891, his dad died and the family grain business was liquidated. At 16, his mom moved the family to Munich. It was that year when Thomas began to write his first collection of short stories. In 1905, Mann married Katia Pringsheim, the Jewish daughter of a mathematician, a family whose members were among the German Jewish elite. In 1907, Mann called himself a philo-Semite. His school friends, publishers, and people he preferred to keep company with were from the Jewish heritage. Mann was far from an orthodox Aryan, believing German Jews appreciated excellent writing and artistic pursuits. After two years of marriage, Mann began to resent being tied down to a wife and child. Mann and his wife eventually produced six children. They vacationed at exclusive spas and were attended by servants where ever they traveled. As a writer, Mann hated discipline.

THOMAS WEELKES
Thomas Weelkes served briefly as organist at Winchester College before his appointment to a similar position at Chichester Cathedral, from which he was eventually dismissed for drunkenness and profanity of language. He was for a time associated with the Chapel Royal. His achievement as a composer lies in his madrigals and in music he wrote for the Church of England. Weelkes wrote a number of service settings that remain in continued use. His anthems include the well-known Hosanna to the Son of David . The sacred madrigal, When David heard , treats with the deepest feeling King David's lament for the death of his son Absalom. Weelkes also published a number of collections of madrigals, following the musical fashions of the turn of the century, the first collection published in 1597. These include On the plaines Fairie traines and Though my carriage be but careless As Vesta was from Latmos hill ascending was his contribution to the collection in honour of Queen Elizabeth, The Triumphs of Oriana.

View other movie reviews Find a movie: The Thomas Crown Affair Rene Russo has made a career of starring opposite some of Hollywood's most powerful men. Kevin Coster ( Tin Cup ), Clint Eastwood ( In The Line of Fire ), John Travolta and Danny Devito ( Get Shorty ) and Robert De Niro (the upcoming Rocky and Bullwinkle ) are just a few. This time out, in The Thomas Crown Affair , she can arguably eclipse her male co-star, Pierce Brosnan ( The World is Not Enough , Mrs. Doubtfire ). This is a new version of the 1968 film starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, the latter of who makes an appearance in the new film. This is also the second time this summer where a film plot involves a thief and a woman who is after him and who may or may not also be a thief. The first time was in Entrapment with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and it wasn't that good. This remake isn't much better. Thomas Crown (Brosnan) is your typical Bruce Wayne type rich boy. He owns a large, multi-million dollar company, and seems to have nothing to do but idle around. He collects fine pieces of art, and by golly, he is an art thief. Crown organizes a heist as a cover for him to steal a Monet that he tried to obtain through legitimate means a while ago. Katherine Banning (Russo) works for an insurance firm, and is sent in to help the police department recover the painting. Working with Banning is Detective Michael McCann (Denis Leary

"Let it be told to the future world, that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet... it." - from " The Crisis " as quoted by Barack Obama , January 20, 2009 "You all remember," said the Controller, in his strong deep voice, "you all remember, I suppose, that beautiful and inspired saying of Our Ford's: History is bunk. History," he repeated slowly, "is bunk." He waved his hand; and it was as though, with an invisible feather whisk, he brushed away a little dust, and the dust was Harappa, was Ur of the Chaldees; some spider-webs, and they were Thebes and Babylon and Cnossos and Mycenae. Whisk. Whisk - and where was Odysseus, where was Job, where were Jupiter and Gotama and Jesus? Whisk - and those specks of antique dirt called Athens and Rome, Jerusalem and the Middle Kingdom - all were gone. Whisk - the place where Italy had been was empty. Whisk, the cathedrals; whisk, whisk King Lear and the Thoughts of Pascal. Whisk, Passion; whisk, Requiem; whisk, Symphony; whisk . . . . "That's why you're taught no history," the Controller was saying. -Brave New World, Aldous Huxley

Dylan Thomas
We present the poetry of Dylan Thomas, read by the author. Thomas often wrote for the sound of words as much as for their meaning, and hearing his rich voice and dramatic style lends a new sense to his verse. The New York Times called Thomas "both a maker and speaker of poetry," and this reading demonstrates the poet's unique manipulation of language and metaphor. Thomas was known for his stormy private life and alcoholism, and died in 1953 at the age of 39.

Dylan Thomas, "The Rimbaud of Cwmdonkin Drive"
Dylan Thomas, drinking his muse
Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales on October 27, 1914. The name Dylan comes from the Mabinogion , a collection of 11 mediaeval Welsh tales. The word means "sea". In the tale Math, the son of Mathonwy, challenges Aranrhod, his niece who claims to be a virgin, to step over his magic wand. "Aranrhod stepped over the wand, and with that step she dropped a sturdy boy with thick yellow hair; the boy gave a loud cry, and with that cry she made her way for the door..... "Well," said Math, "I will arrange for the baptism of this one......and I will call him Dylan." The boy was baptized, whereupon he immediately made for the sea, and when he came to the sea he took on its nature and swam as well as the best fish. He was called Dylan (sea) son of Ton (wave), for no wave ever broke beneath him." Marlais is the name of a stream which runs from the hills near the birthplace of Dylan Thomas' great uncle Gwilym Marles Thomas. Marles is a variation of the name Marlais. Dylan Thomas' sister Nancy also bore a variation of the name Marles.
