Louise Jones Set in England as Henry VIII is trying to manipulate church and state in order to marry Anne Boleyn, this is hands down one of the best historical novels I've read. Mantel's breathtaking writing and exacting research show a changing society and the duplicitous and ambitious people who surround the King. Winner of the 2009 Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. Publisher Comments WINNER OF THE 2009 MAN BOOKER PRIZE WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FOR FICTION A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel August 31, 2009 Purchased from the Book Depository (click on cover for more info) Wolf Hall The Little Stranger . I have no problem with this; writers who undertake longish fictional works of our history deserve appropriate attention. Using that criterion, Wolf Hall
Here are the problems that I had with this novel (severe enough that I had to put it aside halfway through):
Love and Summer Too Much Happiness . Trevor and Munro are mainly short story writers and they share an ability to capture in two paragraphs what most authors take 10 pages to say. Mantel, on the other hand, takes 10 pages to develop (often through confusing dialogue) what most authors take care of in two paragraphs. I make those observations to indicate that my frustration with Wolf Hall I fully expect Wolf Hall Wolf Hall here . There is no doubt that Wolf Hall is an impressive piece of work, I just think many readers will join me in finding it wanting in evaluating the time that has to be invested in reading it. Eight Months on Ghazzah Street
by Hilary Mantel Mantel's prescient and haunting novel of life in Saudi Arabia, reissued to coincide with publication of GIVING UP THE GHOST. 'Horrifyingly gripping. It urges the reader to suspend normal life entirely until the book is read.' Grace Ingoldby, Sunday Times Frances Shore is a cartographer by trade, a maker of maps, but when her husband's work takes her to Saudi Arabia she finds herself unable to map the Kingdom's areas of internal darkness. The regime is corrupt and harsh, the expatriates are hard-drinking money-grubbers, and her Muslim neighbours are secretive, watchful. The streets are not a woman's territory; confined in her flat, she finds her sense of self begin to dissolve. She hears whispers, sounds of distress from the 'empty' flat above her head. She has only rumours, no facts to hang on to, and no one with whom to share her creeping unease. As her days empty of certainty and purpose, her life becomes a blank waiting to be filled by violence and disaster.

By Maya on April 29, 2010 1:53 PM No Comments No TrackBacks The organization of information is a particular passion of mine. How a society organizes its information determines its culture, its values and the means by which it exercises power.
For example, as Walter J. Ong explains in his brilliant contribution to human thought, , oral cultures must organize their information so that the important bits are retained and readily accessed in memory (p. 32-77). Hence, oral cultures emphasize proverbs (as a distillation of wisdom), rhymed and rhythmic verse (easier to remember), and vivid, gory rhetoric that glorifies violence (makes a strong impression on the listener). The results for culture, values and the exercise of power? Epic poetry; devaluing critical thinking (too destabilizing to communal wisdom); superstition (a result of a critical thinking vacuum); and non-rational, superstition-, brute force- and violence-heavy means of exercising power.
So I was intrigued to see Joan Acocella explain, in her
