Pietro, his father, aged about fifty, belonged to an old family of Lecco , originally feudal lords of Barzio , in the Valsassina . The poet's maternal grandfather, Cesare Beccaria , was a well-known author, and his mother Giulia had literary talent as well. The young Alessandro spent his first two years of life in cascina Costa in Galbiate and he was wet-nursed by Caterina Panzeri, as attested by a memorial plate affixed in the place. In 1793 his parents broke their marriage and his mother began a relationship with the highbrow Carlo Imbonati , moving to England and later to Paris . For this reason, their son was brought up in several religious institutes. Alessandro Manzoni was a slow developer, and at the various colleges he attended he was considered a

Web GreatItalians.com Alessandro Manzoni Manzoni, Alessandro Francesco Tommaso Antonio (1785-1873), Italian novelist, poet, and playwright, born in Milan. As a young man he espoused the rationalism and scepticism prevailing in French literature of the Enlightenment. After 1808 his position was that which generally characterized Romantic Italian literature of the first half of the 19th century: a combination of ardent patriotism and devout Roman Catholicism. He took part in the unsuccessful Milanese revolt of 1848 against Austrian rule and in 1860 became a senator in the legislative body of the new kingdom of Italy. Before 1825 he was known as a poet and playwright. Among his writings of this period were an ode on Napoleon's death, Il cinque maggio (1822, The Fifth of May), the volume of religious lyrics Inni Sacri (1810, Sacred Hymns), and the Romantic tragedies Count of Carmagnola (1820, trans. 1868) and Adelchi (1822, trans. 1868). Manzoni is best known for I promessi sposi (1825-1827, The Betrothed, 1834), a Romantic historical novel of life in Milan under Spanish rule in the 17th century. The work, a classic of world literature, set a standard for modern Italian prose and influenced later novelists. It has been translated into many languages. The Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi wrote (1874) his Requiem to honour Manzoni's memory and it is sometimes called the "Manzoni Requiem".

Alessandro Francesco Tommaso Manzoni March 7 May 22 ) was an Italian poet and novelist He was born at Milan . Don Pietro, his father, aged about fifty, belonged to an old family of Lecco , originally feudal lords of Barzio, in the Valsassina, where the memory of their violence is perpetuated in a local proverb, comparing it to the mountain torrent. The poet's maternal grandfather, Cesare Beccaria , was a well-known author, and his mother Giulia had literary talent. Alessandro was a slow developer, and at the various colleges he attended, he was considered a dunce. At fifteen, however, he developed a passion for poetry, and wrote two sonnet s of considerable merit. On the death of his father in 1805, he joined his mother at Auteuil , and spent two years mixing in the literary set of the so-called " ideologues ," philosophers of the 18th century school, among whom he made many friends, notably Claude Charles Fauriel . There too he imbibed the anti-Catholic creed of Voltairianism , and only after his marriage, under the influence of his wife, did he exchange it for a fervent Catholicism In 1806-1807, while at Auteuil, he first appeared before the public as a poet, with two pieces, one entitled
