Christopher Marlowe
Born in the same year as William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe was one of the first great dramatists and poets of the Elizabeth Age. After attending Cambridge University, he came to London in 1587, where he joined the Lord Admiral’s Company as an actor and playwright and met such literary figures as Sir Phillip Sidney and Sir Walter Raleigh. The same year he wrote Tamburlaine the Great, a play in blank verse. His other well-known dramas include Dr. Faustus, The Jew of Malta, and Edward II. He also authored the long poem Hero and Leander, which was completed by George Chapman, and “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love.” All of his works are distinguished for their heroic themes, passion, and poetic language. However, none of them brought him much profit, and he grew frustrated with his situation in life. In 1593, at the age of twenty-nine, Marlowe was suspected of heresy but was found dead before he could be brought before the Privy Council. He had been stabbed in a tavern in Deptford, reputedly over a quarrel about the dinner bill. However, some scholars believe that the murder might have been a deliberate plot connected to Marlowe’s activities as a secret government agent.

Christopher Marlowe (bap. 1564, d. 1593), `The Muses Darling', poet and playwright of English drama wrote Doctor Faustus. Critics and scholars alike have praised his poetic dramas and innovation of blank verse. On 26 February 1564 at St George's, Canterbury, Christopher Marlowe was baptised, the same year Shakespeare was born. His father was John Marlowe, a cobbler, his mother Katherine. Though `Marlowe' is used now, the family's name had various spellings over the years. Not a lot is known of Marlowe's childhood and there is some question as to the dates and chronology of some of his works. With his scholarly potential acknowledged, in 1578 Marlowe entered King's School, Canterbury, on scholarship from Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury to study music, religion, Latin and literature. Two years later he was off to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, on another scholarship to study philosophy and history. He graduated in 1587 with an M.A. Sir Francis Walsingham recruited him, as well as many other men of letters at the time, to become a trusted government part-time secret service agent. There are school buttery and audit records taken during his school years but little else to confirm his comings and goings, merely long absences that leave room for speculation as to his activities. Rumours suggested that he had travelled to Rheims, France as a Catholic convert but the Queen herself cleared his name in the Privy Council's letter of recommendation for his M.A. degree dated 29 June 1587;

Marlowe, Christopher (1564-1593) page: Christopher Marlowe represents homoerotic situations and incidents in his plays and poems more frequently and more variously that any other major English Renaissance writer. Born in Canterbury in the same year as Shakespeare, Marlowe was his most significant predecessor as an English playwright who was also a great poet. The son of a cobbler who earned a scholarship to Cambridge, where he received a B.A. in 1584 and an M.A. in 1587, Marlowe pursued a course of study that was designed to culminate in holy orders, yet the most profound result of his education may have been his love of classical literature, especially Ovid, whom he was to translate and whose comic ironies and worldly sophistication were to influence him greatly. The Pope . Marlowe's lampooning of the papal court leaves the sixteenth century Protestant English audience with no comfortable allegiances. Welcome to The Marlowe Society
Christopher Marlowe as poet and playwright was at the forefront of the 16th Century dramatic renaissance, a man to whom Shakespeare and others owe a huge debt of gratitude. He also led a full and intriguing life outside the theatre. Entangled in the outer reaches of the Elizabethan espionage web, Marlowe's life is alleged to have ended prematurely in 1593 when, at just 29, he was reportedly stabbed to death in Deptford. The Objects of The Marlowe Society are to present Christopher Marlowe in his true light as a great poet and playwright, the innovator of blank verse drama; to encourage the performance of his plays; to discuss and study Elizabethan and Jacobean literature with particular attention to Marlowe's place in it; and to publish historically valid information about him based on research. Read more about the Society's policy , including its position on the Shakespearean Authorship debate.

Marlowe, Christopher
(baptized Feb. 26, 1564, Canterbury, Kent, Eng.d. May 30, 1593, Deptford, near London), Elizabethan poet and Shakespeare's most important predecessor in English drama, noted especially for his establishment of dramatic blank verse.
Early years
Marlowe was the second child and eldest son of John Marlowe, a Canterbury shoemaker. Nothing is known of his first schooling, but on Jan. 14, 1579, he entered the King's School, Canterbury, as a scholar. A year later he went to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Obtaining his bachelor of arts degree in 1584, he continued in residence at Cambridgewhich may imply that he was intending to take Anglican orders. In 1587, however, the university hesitated about granting him the master's degree; its doubts (arising from his frequent absences from the university) were apparently set at rest when the Privy Council sent a letter declaring that he had been employed "on matters touching the benefit of his country"apparently in Elizabeth I's secret service.
Last years and literary career.
