Jose Marti
By Carlos Ripoll Jose Marti is considered one of the great writers of the Hispanic world. His significance for the American Reader, however, stems from the universality and timelessness of his thought. Marti devoted his life to ending colonial rule in Cuba and to preventing the island from falling under the control of any country (including the United States) whose political ideologies were inimical to the principles he held. With those goals, and with the conviction that the freedom of the Caribbean was crucial to Latin American security and to the balance of power in the world, he devoted his talents to the forging of a nation. Thus, the scope of his work: he was a revolutionary, a guide, and more importantly, a mentor. His vast experience and education enabled him to move comfortably in the most diverse fields, which is what makes his teachings so rich to us indeed. Insofar as Marti believed that freedom and justice should be the cornerstones of any government, one has only to read his work and learn of the struggle that he took up freely. He could never accept the curtailment of the natural expansiveness of the human spirit, for truly he believed that man's redemption would come through love and unfettered reason. Therefore, his doctrines are, and must be, at odds with the totalitarian dogma that has existed in Cuba since its unfortunate demise. All of Marti's teachings contradict that political system which never fails to demonstrate its intolerance towards individual freedom and it's love of its own materialistic empowerment. His writings condemn all despotic regimes and the abridgment of human rights. Furthermore, he goes on to denounce the lack of spirituality and type of arrogance that we find in the current dictatorship. For this reason, the publication of Marti's thoughts, in all its force, is of the greatest importance today. His beliefs, which can guide democracies and if heeded, offer them greater security, speak more eloquently against the Cuban apostasy than all the accusations that others might make. .

Spain where he published, , a rousing attack on Cuban prisons. He received his university education in Madrid and Zaragoza and then returned to the Western Hemisphere. (Caracas) and (Buenos Aires). He wrote everything from a magazine for children ( Edad de Oro ) to poetry ( Versos sencillos 1891), to essays on the nature of the United States which he admired for its energy and industry as well as its notable statesmen, particularly the framers of the Constitution. However, he denounced its imperialist attitude toward its southern neighbors. Yet, despite his busy literary career, he spent much of his time planning the second Cuban struggle for independence. He insisted that the next war should be short (to avoid U.S. intervention) and fought with a "republican method and spirit" (to forestall the possibility of a military dictatorship.) In 1892 he founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party to organize the coming struggle. By early 1895, his preparations were complete. He would set sail with the generals from the last struggle and considerable supplies from Fernandina, Florida. It was only in the 1920's and 1930's that Martí was embraced by a new generation of nationalist Cubans as "el apóstol," and cherished by many other Latin Americans as well. As the great Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío noted, Martí belonged to "an entire race, an entire continent."

Martí, José
Cuban, 1853–1895
Martí consolidated his essay activities during the last 15 years of his life in New York (1880–95); starting in 1881 he sent regular contributions to important Spanish American newspapers such as La Opinión Nacional (Caracas) and La Nacion (Buenos Aires). The excellent “Cartas de Nueva York” (Letters from New York)—his account of the American society of that period—is an example of this important work.
When Martí began his career, Spanish prose was lifeless and exhausted. Conscious of and concerned about the sense of beauty and with a fundamental fidelity to his perception of reality, Martí interpreted the essay as a literary genre that favors human causes, often patriotic and nationalistic. Thus, beginning in 1882. and even before the great masters of Spanish American Modernism, his essays display a new style, which ultimately translated into a profound revival of the literary prose of every Spanish-speaking nation. His essays of the early 1880s are free of superfluous baroque traits and anachronistic Romanticism; his prose is direct and agile, rich in content, endowed with power and color, as he defines the character of the ephemeral Revista Venezolana (1881; Venezuelan journal):
“Simplicity as a condition is recommended, but this does not imply the exclusion of an elegant touch.”
