Edgar Lee Masters: A Biography

Herbert K. Russell
July 2005
Paperback From Library Journal A writer and lawyer, Masters (1868-1950) achieved readership, fame, and controversy with the publication of Spoon River Anthology (SRA) in 1915. Having grown up in rural Illinois, his setting for the Spoon River epitaphs, Masters wanted to write truths that were purely American. Freeing himself from poetic rules, which earned him much criticism, Masters created the 214 poems that make up the SRA. Masters published 54 works poetry, plays, essays, novels, biographies but none received the international success or critical attention that SRA did. Initially, Masters had a successful law practice (Clarence Darrow was an associate), but he chose to write for a living, without much financial reward or emotional satisfaction. His adult nature was not admirable; he was frequently an absent father, a womanizer...

Edgar Lee Masters (1869-1950) American poet and novelist, best-known as the author of SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY (1915), a series of 'auto-epitaphs' or monologues in free verse, which often contradicted the pious and optimistic epitaphs written on the gravestones. The book gained Masters a large following and set him in the vanguard of the Chicago literary renaissance. "Life all around me here in the village:
Tragedy, comedy, valor and truth,
Courage, constancy, heroism, failure -
All in the loom, and oh what patterns!"

('Petit, the Poet,' from Spoon River Anthology Edgar Lee Masters was born in Garnett, Kansas. In 1880 his family settled at Lewistown, Illinois, near Spoon River, where Masters grew up on his grandfather's farm. Lewistown and Petersburg became models for the scene of his poems in Spoon River Anthology . Masters's father, Hardin, was a lawyer, and did not encourage his son's literary aspirations, refusing to support studies in this field. Masters attended Knox College, known for its conservatism, and in 1891 he was admitted to the bar. After practicing law with his father for a year, he moved to Chicago, where he worked as a lawyer for nearly thirty years. As a result of a boyhood case of pneumonia, Masters had always been weak in the lungs, and in 1915 he contracted pneumonia through overwork. His legal clients started to decrease partly because his revealing poems about bigotry and liaisons in

Edgar Lee Masters was born in Garnett, Kansas, on August 23, 1868, but soon after his birth his family moved to Lewistown, Illinois, the town near Springfield where Masters grew up. His youth was marred by his father's financial struggles with a faltering law practice and reluctance to support his son's literary interests. Masters attended Knox College for a year but was then forced by the family's finances to withdraw and continue his studies privately. He was admitted to the bar in 1891, and he moved to Chicago in 1892, where he found a job collecting bills for the Edison Company. He gradually built a successful law practice, and for eight years he was the partner of Clarence Darrow. In 1898 he published his first collection, A Book of Verses

And well they might: For the roots had grown so wide and deep That the soil of the hill could not withhold Aught of its virtue, enriched by rain, And warmed by the sun; But yielded it all to the thrifty roots, Through which it was drawn and whirled to the trunk, And thence to the branches, and into the leaves, Wherefrom the breeze took life and sang. Now I, an undertenant of the earth, can see That the branches of a tree Spread no wider than its roots. And How shall the soul of a man be larger than the life he has lived?

SAMUEL is forever talking of his elm But I did not need to die to learn about roots: I, who dug all the ditches about Spoon River. Look at my elm! Sprung from as good a seed as his, Sown at the same time, It is dying at the top: Not from lack of life, nor fungus, Nor destroying insect, as the sexton thinks. Look, Samuel, where the roots have struck rock, And can no further spread. And all the while the top of the tree Is tiring itself out, and dying, Trying to... Masters, Edgar Lee

There are several ways you can navigate this site: the original order groups together related people in a meaningful way. You may find it easier to look up specific people in the alphabetical index , or to use the search form on the right. A selection of Spoon River's most prominent, notorious and talkative citizens can be found below; a breakdown of poems from the 1915 and 1916 editions is also available.
