SUMMARY THE HEROES OF THE CITY'S STREETS BECOME THE HUNTED IN THIS CRIME FICTION CLASSICED MCBAIN'S FIRST 87th PRECINCT NOVELSwift, silent, and deadly someone is knocking off the 87th Precinct's finest, one by one. The "how" of the killings is obvious: three .45 shots from the dark add up to one, two, three very dead detectives. The "why" and the "who" are the Precinct's headaches now. When Detective Reardon is found dead, motive is a big question mark. But when his partner becomes victim number two, it looks like open-and-shut grudge killings. That is, until a third detective buys it.With one meager clue, Detective Steve Carella begins his grim search for the killer, a search that takes him into the city's underworld to a notorious brothel, to the apartment of a beautiful and dangerous widow, and finally to a .45 automatic aimed straight at his head....

Features: A critic reflects on his last conversation with the Master by Anthony Rainone by Wayne Allen Sallee Fiddlers: A Novel of the 87th Precinct by Ed McBain Published by Harcourt 272 pages, 2005 Buy it online Befitting an author who lived most of his 78 years primarily under two different identities those of Ed McBain and Evan Hunter although neither of those was his real name (he was born to Italian parents as Salvatore Alberto Lombino), McBain, as he's best known, seemed very much a dualistic character. His 87th Precinct police-procedural novels, the first of which was Cop Hater (1956), inspired not only innumerable tough-guy knockoffs, but also TV dramas such as Hill Street Blues NYPD Blue , and The Shield Isola " ("island" in Italian). Bringing together those multiple, and sometimes contradictory, parts of a crime novelist who so often inspired hyperbole ("To say that Ed McBain is a giant among popular writers is like saying the Colossus of Rhodes was a pretty fair piece of municipal sculpture," opined interviewer/author John C. Carr) will be one task for speakers at a public memorial service to be held tomorrow, Saturday, October 15, in honor of McBain, who died of cancer of the larynx on July 6 . That service is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Manhattan's Ethical Culture Society (2 West 64th Street, at the corner of Central Park West). Saturday would have been the author's 79th birthday.

MWA Grand Master McBain's 55th 87th Precinct police procedural suffers by comparison with 2004's Hark! as well as other top books in this iconic series, but still has plenty of good moments. A killer living the high life is exacting the last full measure of revenge. As his victims pile up, the 87th falls prey to the FMU or "first man up" rule. Since the initial victim, a blind violinist shot in the face, was done on the 87th's turf, all subsequent murders are theirs as well. More are not long in arriving; each victim shot in the face at close range with the same 9mm Glock. The whole cast of the 87th is stretched thin trying to track down clues in geographically disparate killings. This gives McBain license to update us on such matters as the romance between Bert Kling and Sharyn Cooke and Fat Ollie Weeks's... The Gutter and the Grave

From Publishers Weekly Fiddlers Ed McBain Sept 2005 Audio Compact Disc - Unabridged From Publishers Weekly Stransky proves a fine choice as narrator of Ed McBain's final 87th Precinct novel. A series of killings has claimed several victims who seem unrelated except that each has been killed by the same gun with two shots to the face. The detectives of the 87th try to find the common thread linking the victims that will lead to the killer. McBain's fictional city of Isola has stalwartly stood in for New York City for nearly five decades and does so once again, offering Stransky the opportunity to show off the diversity of the city's populace as they weave in and out of the detective's investigation. Stransky slips easily into each of McBain's characters regardless of sex, age or ethnicity, keeping his portrayals grounded and real. His descriptive narration, especially when dealing with the murders and their aftermath,...
