McCARTHY, Cormac Blood Meridian NY, Random House, (1985). A review copy of his fifth book, a powerful novel of the Old West, based on an actual series of events in 1849-1950 in Texas and Mexico, and rendered with an eye to bringing to life the surreal violence of the time and place. Recently voted one of the five best works of American fiction of the last quarter century in a survey conducted by The New York Times Book Review . McCarthy's first five books sold fewer than 15,000 copies total this title selling only 1883 copies before it was remaindered. Since the success of All the Pretty Horses in 1992, his novels have had first printings in excess of 100,000 copies. One corner lightly tapped; else fine in a fine dust jacket, with publisher's promotional information laid in. A beautiful copy, and very scarce as an advance copy. To quote from the review of the audiobook in KLIATT, May 2007: The Man and the Boy are wandering the countryside, trying to find food and simply to survive. The Boy was born a short time after a manmade disaster, probably an atomic bomb atomic bomb or A-bomb, weapon deriving its explosive force from the release of atomic energy through the fission (splitting) of heavy nuclei (see nuclear energy). The first atomic bomb was produced at the Los Alamos, N.Mex. , destroyed the world as we know it. Years have passed and the Boy is now somewhere in mid-childhood. Mccarthy, Cormac
Cormac McCarthy was born in Rhode Island in 1933. He is the third of six children (the eldest son) born to Charles Joseph and Gladys Christina McGrail McCarthy (he has two brothers and three sisters). He was originally named Charles (after his father), but he renamed himself Cormac after the Irish King (another source says that McCarthy's family was responsible for legally changing his name to the Gaelic equivalent of "son of Charles").
In 1937, when he was four, the family moved to Knoxville, and his father became a lawyer for the Tennessee Valley Authority (legal staff 1934-67; chief counsel 1958-67). In 1967, the McCarthys moved from Knoxville to Washington, D.C., where Charles was the principal attorney in a law firm until his retirement.
Cormac was raised Roman Catholic. He attended Catholic High School in Knoxville, then went to the University of Tennessee in 1951-52. His major: liberal arts. McCarthy joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953; he served four years, spending two of them stationed in Alaska, where he hosted a radio show.
In 1957-60, McCarthy returned to the university, where he published two stories in the student literary magazine, The Phoenix, calling himself C. J. McCarthy, Jr. While at the university, he won the Ingram-Merrill Award for creative writing in 1959 and 1960. He married a fellow student, Lee Holleman, and they had a son, Cullen.

SUMMARY At once brutal and tender, despairing and rashly hopeful, spare of language and profoundly moving, this work is a fierce and haunting meditation on the tenuous divide between civilization and savagery, and the essential, sometimes terrifying power of filial love.
