McClatchy, J.D. (b. 1945 ) page: McClatchy also has written accomplished poems in such unusual and demanding structural and metrical forms as sestinas, villanelles, canzones, haiku, trimeters, and poems in syllabics. Writing about his pantoum (a Malaysian form of quatrains in which the second and fourth lines are repeated as the first and third lines of the following quatrain) "The Method" ( Stars Principal ), McClatchy mentions his childhood love of poetry and puzzles. He remarks that "a preference for form is temperamental, a part of one's character before any formal steps are taken." In his case, he prefers "smudged" forms, in which the neurosis of repetition is slightly altered (as it is in "The Method"). Literary Friendships Hazmat contains the long poem "Ouija," which is a tribute to the late poet James Merrill, one of McClatchy's closest friends and a poet who is often seen as a major influence on McClatchy's early writing. "Ouija" plays on the supernatural world Merrill invoked in his epic

Anne Sexton and the Transformation of Fairy Tales
Fall 2000 Mondays 7-9 pm, 9/11-10/23, 2000 Hugo House
Course Description: Are you a lover or hater of fairy tales? Do you adore the Seven Dwarfs and detest Cinderella? Do you delight in both? Do you lament the presentation of stepmothers as wicked? Do you crack up at the Brothers Grimm or is it a challenge to get past the first page of these fantasies that harbor sub-texts of real life? Whatever the case, here's a chance to add your written voice to the genre. Using Anne Sexton's poems in Transformations (a take-off on fairy tales) as background reading, class participants will create a fairy tale (in any form) or another piece of work (poems, autobiography, story) to revise throughout the quarter. Those who wish will present their work in class for critique. Required texts: Anne Sexton, Transformations, 1971; Grimm's Fairy Tales For further reading on Sexton, try for starters, Sexton's The Complete Poems and Anne Sexton: A Biography by Diane Wood Middlebrook, 1991.
Class participants are encouraged to attend Theater Schmeater's September 28 performance and post-play discussion of Transformations and Other Tales, at Hugo House. To reserve a seat, contact Theater Schmeater at 324-5801.

11. A Short History Of Appalachian Traditional Music

Appalachian Traditional Music
A Short History
MOST Europeans consider the Appalachians to be mountains of the southeastern region of the United States, but in truth they encompass eighteen states, reaching from Maine to Georgia, and include, among others, the Berkshires of Connecticut, the Green Mountains of New Hampshire, the Catskills of New York, the Blue Ridge of Virginia, and the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Southern Appalachia includes three hundred counties covering most of West Virginia and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, North and South Carolina, and Virginia, an area called today the Southern Highlands or Upland South, or, in Colonial times, the 'Back Country'. Although a large physiographic area, a body of behaviors and cultural identities based upon speech and dialect, building practices, folk music and dance, crafts, superstitions and religion, and concepts like feuding and moonshining link all 1500 miles of these mountains. Today when ethnomusicologists discuss 'Appalachian music' they generally divide the term into two periods: the traditional music - including ballads and dance tunes, mostly brought over with anglo-celtic immigrants, and in evidence from the early eighteenth century through 1900 - and the 'old-time' music popular from around 1900 through 1930, a blend of that tradition with parlour and vaudeville music, African-American styles, and Minstrel Show tunes.
TO properly understand how traditional Appalachian music grew and dispersed it helps to have some understanding of how the Appalachians were formed. These mountains were shaped over 500 million years in three separate building periods called oroginies. During the first period, the Taconic, and the second, the Acadian, North America, Greenland, Ireland, and Scotland were all one land mass called Laurentia. At this time the Caledonia Mountains rose up and wore down before the Atlantic Ocean started to split the continent. This is why the mountains of the Scottish Highlands and the Appalachians seem so similar; they were the same range!
