    McEwan, Ian. On Chesil Beach
Kliatt Nov, 2007 by Sue Rosenzweig
McEWAN, Ian. On Chesil Beach. Read by the author. 4 cds. 4.5 hrs. Books on Tape. 2007 978-14159-3880-5. $50.00. Vinyl; plot notes. A * This short novel, which begins in 1962 on Florence and Edward's wedding night, has many flashbacks and flash forwards as the author puts meat on the bones of what turns out to be an irreparably disastrous experience for the young couple. The author reads his own words in an amazingly sensitive, quiet, and thoughtful manner. His pacing, rhythms, and inflections perfectly match the writing and add to the overall listening experience. This is pretty much adult fare, though in an excellent author interview at the end McEwan relates his experiences reading to younger audiences who react favorably to the story. Graphic sex. Sue Rosenzweig, Consultant, Lincoln, RI ARecommended for advanced students and adults. this code will help librarians and teachers working in high schools where there are honors and advanced placement students. This also will help extend KLIATT's usefulness in public libraries.

Christian . A devout Christian if ever there was one. He is convinced that God has sent him to convert Joe's anti-Christian opinion.
What is Joe's occupation? Ian McEwan's "Enduring Love"

Scientific journalist . It is a fact Joe does go on a bit about his science. He wants to get back to 'real science', which is teaching science. Personally, I'd rather sit at home all day writing randomly!

In later novels McEwan moved away from his more perverse themes while continuing to display a keen psychological insight into his characters and continuing to explore ways that extreme situations impact ordinary people.
