Maureen F. McHugh:China Mountain Zhang
This is one of the most interesting books I've read in a while. It's not really a novel, despite appearances. It tends to follow one character, Zhang Zhong Shan/Rafael Luis, but does wander off onto only partially-linked tangents with other main characters. No, this is really a collection of linked short stories. As such, there is no plot on the grand scale. This is a story of a man trying to find a place for himself, in a world where the U.S. has become Communist Chinese, and pure Chinese are the first-class citizens. Zhang himself is half-Hispanic, and American-born at that. Further, his name, Zhong Shan, is embarrassing because it's the name of a Communist hero (a.k.a. Sun Yat-Sen), which translates as "China Mountain". And, finally, he is gay, under a regime that considers it a capital crime. But he manages to carve a niche for himself anyway. Through a lengthy posting on Baffin Island, he gets a scholarship to a university in Beijing, where he learns a new technique called "organic engineering". By the end, he was returned to the States and is setting up his own business. It's an almost prosaic, very low-key succession of events. The reason it succeeds is that Zhang is a very interesting character. He's prone to underestimating himself, and expecting failure because of his background. Watching his confidence develop is one of the joys of the book.

May 15, 2004 Rating: 8 (of 10) I don't know quite what I was expecting out of China Mountain Zhang , Mauren F. McHugh's multi-award-winning science-fiction novel. I guess I was expecting a lot more action. Not that every novel with Chinese people in it has to be action-packed, but I certainly expectedI don't knowa few more guns, some big explosions, maybe a starship invasion or two. Instead, I got a very, very quiet novel, one that is essentially about eking out a living in a mildly unusual world. I use the phrase "mildly unusual" only because, in the context of the science-fiction genre, the universe of China Mountain Zhang isn't particularly exotic. It's the 22nd Century, and Communist China has long since taken over the world. (The book is very good about doling out little bits of this history; McHugh slyly paints all the stories people tell with the gloss of historical memory, giving their fond [or not-so-fond] recollections of history a genuine feel.) Mankind has colonized a few planetsin particular, Mars. Computers are pretty advanced; transportation is much improved; people are into a sport called kite-flying. The most significant aspect of McHugh's universe is that it is very Chinese-centric. Americans are looked down upon as hicks; if you're American, and you can make it into one of the uber-prestigious Chinese universities, then you "must be one smart son of a bitch," as one character says.
