Herbert Marshall McLuhan CC (July 21, 1911 - December 31, 1980) was a Canadian educator, philosopher , and scholar – a professor of English literature, a literary critic, and a communications theorist. McLuhan's work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media ecology. McLuhan is well-known for coining the expressions "the medium is the message" and the "global village. McLuhan's views on the importance of technology for social organization helped to promote the idea that the world is one, transnational human community. McLuhan was a fixture in media discourse from the late 1960s to his death and he continues to be an influential and controversial figure. Years after his death he was named the "patron saint" of Wired magazine.

Description
30 years after its publication Marshall McLuhan's The Medium is the Massage remains his most entertaining, provocative, and piquant book. With every technological and social "advance" McLuhan's proclamation that "the media work us over completely" becomes more evident and plain. In his words, 'so pervasive are they in their personal, political, economic, aesthetic, psychological, moral, ethical and social consequences that they leave no part of us untouched, unaffected, or unaltered'. McLuhan's remarkable observation that "societies have always been shaped more by the nature of the media by which men communicate than by the content of the communication" is undoubtedly more relevant today than ever before. With the rise of the internet and the explosion of the digital revolution there has never been a better time to revisit Marshall McLuhan.

McLuhan, Marshall
McLuhan, Marshall (1911-80) a Canadian writer who was interested in the media newspapers, radio, and television , and is known for inventing the phrase "the medium is the message", by which he meant that the way in which people receive information has more influence on what they think than the information itself. He also said that the world was becoming a "global village", meaning that telecommunications were making the world seem smaller and that the countries of the world were becoming more dependent on one another. parent.curEntryId=26455; parent.prevEntryId=26454; parent.nextEntryId=26456; parent.gsSenseId=null; parent.giPhrId=null; Definition from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Advanced Learner's Dictionary. Definition:
Canadian Professor of English who coined the celebrated phrase 'The Medium is the Message' as a chapter title in Understanding Media: the Extensions of Man (1964). His original argument is very detailed and conceptually difficult; in the marketing communications context, it is usually taken as a reminder that audience reaction to a message may be significantly affected by their evaluation of the channel through which it is transmitted. Thus the choice of advertising medium mediates response to the advertisement, or the salesman's appearance influences the reaction his sales pitch. In practice, MEDIA PLANNERS certainly demonstrate implicit acceptance of McLuhan's hypothesis when they use such terms as 'relaxed', 'urgent' or 'chatty' to describe types of newspaper, or discuss 'media values' and 'rub-off effect' in their professional journals. Academic marketing authors have recently proposed some components of this channel effect. Cross-References:

McLuhan, Marshall (1911-1980) He was a famous Canadian communications scholar and educator, perhaps the most influential man that will have written in his field. His work was revolutionary in the field of communications. He taught in Canada and the United States. He had gained recognition in the 1960s with his proposal that electronic media, especially television, were creating a global village in which the medium is the message, that is, the means of communications has a greater influence on people than the information itself. His books include The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962) and Understanding Media (1964). His work involves messages left in his writings, for example, "The electric light escapes attention as a communication medium just because it has no "content". And this makes it an invaluable instance of how people fail to study media at all. For it is not till the electric light is used to spell out some brand name that it is noticed as a medium. Then it is not the light but the "content" (or what is really another medium) that is noticed. The message of the electric light is like the message of electric power in industry, totally radical, pervasive, and decentralized. For electric light and power are separate from their uses, yet they eliminate time and space factors in human association exactly as do radio, telegraph, telephone, and TV, creating involvement in depth."(Understanding Media, p.9 by Marshall McLuhan)

SUMMARY When Marshall McLuhan first coined the phrases global village and the medium is the message in 1964, no-one could have predicted today's information-dependent planet. No-one, that is, except for a handful of science fiction writers and Marshall McLuhan. Understanding Media was written twenty years before the PC revolution and thirty years before the rise of the Internet. Yet McLuhan's insights into our engagement with a variety of media led to a complete rethinking of our entire society. He believed that the message of electronic media foretold the end of humanity as it was known. In 1964, this looked like the paranoid babblings of a madman. In our twenty-first century digital world, the madman looks quite sane. Understanding Media: the most important book ever written on communication. Ignore its message at your peril.
