Henry Louis Mencken was a writer of enormous national influence who also played a leading role in southern intellectual life of the 1920s. A native of Baltimore, he became a contributor to the Smart Set and the American Mercury Evening Mail and was reprinted in his book, Prejudices, Second Series (1920). In his essay he charged that the South was "almost as sterile, artistically, intellectually, culturally, as the Sahara Desert." "In all that gargantuan paradise of the fourth-rate," he contended, "there is not a single picture gallery worth going into, or a single orchestra capable of playing the nine symphonies of Beethoven, or a single opera-house, or a single theater devoted to decent plays." Most southern poetry and prose was drivel, he charged, and "when you come to critics, musical composers, painters, sculptors, architects and the like, you will have to give it up, for there is not even a bad one between the Potomac mud-flats and the Gulf." Nor, Mencken added, a historian, sociologist, philosopher, theologian, or scientist. The essay, written in characteristic Menckenian hyperbole, suggested that the condition of the modern South was especially lamentable because the antebellum South, particularly Virginia, had been the seat of American civilization. Mencken attributed the decline of southern culture to the "poor whites" who, he charged, had seized control of the South after the Civil War. Particularly to blame were the preachers and the politicians. What the South needed, he maintained, was a return to influence of a remnant of the old aristocracy.

Henry Louis Mencken, better known as H. L. Mencken, was a twentieth century journalist, satirist and social critic, a cynic and a freethinker, known as the "Sage of Baltimore" and the "American Nietzsche". He is often regarded as one of the most influential American writers of the early 20th century. At one point in his career he was America's favorite pundit and literary critic at the same time. Life
Mencken was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of a cigar factory owner of German extraction. Having moved into the new family home at 1524 Hollins Street when he was three years old, he lived in the house for the rest of his life, apart from five years of married life. He became a reporter for the Baltimore Morning Herald in 1899, and moved to The Baltimore Sun in 1906. At this point in time, he had also begun writing editorial columns that demonstrated the author he would soon become.

Mencken, a prolific journalist and writer known for his aggressive iconoclasm and brilliant style, was born on September 12, 1880, in Baltimore to August Mencken and Anna Abhau Mencken. In 1883, the Menckens moved to 1524 Hollins Street, where Mencken would reside for the rest of his life, except 1930-35, when he lived with his wife Sara Haardt Mencken (1898-1935) at 704 Cathedral Street. Mencken attended the Knapp's Institute (1886-92) and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (1892-96), then worked in his father's cigar factory until 1899, when August Mencken suddenly died and Mencken could begin his journalism career as a reporter for the Baltimore Morning Herald. In 1905, Mencken became managing editor of the Herald, which folded in 1906. In 1910, he helped to establish the Baltimore Evening Sun; his column, entitled "Free Lance," appeared from 1911 to 1915. Silenced for his pro-German and anti-British views during World War I, Mencken returned to the Evening Sun in 1920; his wide-ranging "Monday Articles" appeared from 1920 to 1938, when he served as temporary editor. Mencken stopped writing for the Sunpapers in 1941 because he disagreed with the paper's support of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's foreign policy. He spent his next seven years working on books and memoirs. H. L. Mencken

Henry Louis Mencken (1880 - 1956)
by Gibbons Burke T he most prominent newspaperman, book reviewer, and political commentator of his day, Henry Louis Mencken was a libertarian before the word came into usage. His prose is as clear as an azure sky, and his rhetoric as deadly as a rifle shot. Frequent targets of his lance were Franklin Roosevelt and New Deal politics, Comstocks victuals offered up by Chesapeake Bay. M encken's writing is endearing because of its wit, its crisp style, and the obvious delight he takes in it. The Introduction to The Impossible H.L. Mencken: A Collection of His Best Newspaper Stories , edited by Marion Elizabeth Rodgers which relates Mencken's manner while reporting on the presidential conventions: No other entertainment gave him greater pleasure than reporting from the conventions; nor did anyone appreciate his efforts more than Mencken himself. One reporter, peering through Mencken's window late at night after one rally, recalled watching him at work alone in his hotel room, pounding out copy on a typewriter propped on a desk. He would type a few sentences, read them, slap his thigh, toss his head back, and roar with laughter. Then he would type some more lines, guffaw, and so on until the end of the article. A cigar jammed in the side of Mencken's mouth completes the image. Rare is the picture of him without one in a hand, his mouth, or a nearby ashtray. (His father was the owner of Baltimore's Mencken Cigar Company, which provided Mencken his first gainful employment, which he ditched not long after his father's death to become a cub reporter.) Here's Mencken's assessment of life in the United States:
