Henri Michaux (1899-1984) Belgian-born French painter, journalist, and poet, who explored the inner self and human suffering through dreams, fantasies, and drug-induced experiments. Michaux's work show his interest in Surrealism , but he never joined the movement, and his writings avoid all classifications. Often Michaux narrated his suggestive prose poems in the first person and warned and advised the reader. However, Michaux leaves the question open, whether his images - steel prisons, labyrinths, slashing sounds, demons, dragons, snakes, camels and other animals - refer to the unconscious or outside world. The constant widening of the thinkable whereto I was called, successively
forcing in me levels of ignorance, exalted me in a peculiar way. Their talk
like their voices, their attacking allure breathed audacity. To translate, to pursue, to follow...
(from 'Saisir') Henri Michaux was born in Namur as the son of a catholic lawyer. He was educated at Putte-Grasheide and at a Jesuit school in Brussels. Michaux intended to join the priesthood but was dissuaded from this by his father. After a religious crisis, Michaux started his medical studies at Brussels University. Rebelling against his parents wishes, he dropped his studies and traveled in North and South America as a ship's stoker in the French Merchant Marines. Later Michaux's journeys led him to Africa, India and China. In 1923 Michaux started to write for Franz Hellens's magazine

Henri Michaux (24 May 1899 - 18 October 1984) was a highly idiosyncratic Belgian -born poet writer , and painter who wrote in the French language . He later took French citizenship. Michaux is best known for his esoteric books written in a highly accessible style, and his body of work includes poetry travelogues , and art criticism . Michaux travelled widely, tried his hand at several careers, and experimented with drugs , the latter resulting in two of his most intriguing works, Miserable Miracle and The Major Ordeals of the Mind and the Countless Minor Ones
edit Travels and Work
In 1930-1931 Henri Michaux visited Japan, China and India. The result of this trip is the book A Barbarian in Asia . Oriental culture became one of his biggest influences (the philosophy of Buddhism and the Oriental calligraphy later became the principal subject of many of his poems and inspired many of his drawings.) He also traveled to Africa and to the American continent, where he visited Ecuador and published the book

Henri Michaux
Namur 1899 -
Paris 1984
The French writer, painter and graphic artist Henri Michaux was born in the Belgian town of Namur in 1899 and spent his childhood in Brussels. He wanted to become a priest, but followed his father's wish and began to study medicine in 1919, but soon abandoned this plan and signed on as a seaman.
After reading works by Lautréamont he began writing in 1922. His acquaintance with Paul Klee, Max Ernst and Giorgio de Chirico, whom he met in Paris in 1925, inspired him to first painting and drawing attempts. Between 1927 and 1937 he travelled through South America and Asia. Afterwards Michaux sketched and painted his Phantomisms.
He had his first exhibitions in Parisian galleries, followed by important shows abroad. In the mid 1950s Michaux began experimenting with hallucinatory drugs, particularly with mescaline, letting his experiences inspire his writing, painting and drawing. These works were first exhibited in 1956 at the Galerie La Hune in Paris. Then there was a large exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in December 1957 and a retrospective exhibition organised by Daniel Cordier in Frankfurt/Main in March 1959.
His ink drawings evoke scriptural elements and calligraphic symbols which are a seismographic reflection of the artist's inner emotions. The two systems of word-language and sign-language pervade each other. Henri Michaux's impressive oeuvre attracted much international recognition. He exhibited works at the "documenta" in Kassel in 1959 and 1964; he was awarded the Einaudi-Prize at the Biennale in Venice in 1960.

Henri Michaux
peintre et poète français d'origine belge
(Namur 1899 - Paris 1984)
Henri Michaux, 1950,
par Paul Facchetti,
in Tirés à part, Au fil de l'Encre, 1998
