43. Arthur Miller--Interview
From the March-April issue of Humanities magazine with NEH chairman William R. Ferris.
http://www.neh.gov/whoweare/miller/interview.html
William R. Ferris: I'd like to begin with Death of a Salesman . In the play Willie Loman's wife says, "He's not the finest character that ever lived, but he's a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him, so attention must be paid. He's not to be allowed to fall into his grave like an old dog." What kind of attention do you mean? Arthur Miller: I suppose she was speaking about the care and support that his family might give him, in that context. Of course, there is a larger context, which is social and even political-that a lot of people give a lot of their lives to a company or even the government, and when they are no longer needed, when they are used up, they're tossed aside. I guess that would encompass it. Ferris: When Death of a Salesman opened in 1949, Brooks Atkinson wrote in his New York Times review that you had written a superb drama. He went on to say, "Mr. Miller has no moral precepts to offer and no solutions of the salesman's problems. He is full of pity, but he brings no piety to it." Is there more of a moral message in Salesman than Atkinson saw there? Miller: It depends on your vantage point. Willie Loman's situation is even more common now than it was then. A lot of people are eliminated earlier from the productive life in this society than they used to be. I've gotten a number of letters from people who were in pretty good positions at one point or another and then were just peremptorily discarded. If you want to call that a moral area, which I think it is, then he was wrong. What I think he was referring to was that the focus of the play is the humanity of these people rather than coming at them from some a priori political position. I think that is true.

Arthur Miller was born in New York City on 17th October, 1915. The son of a small businessman, Miller worked in a warehouse after graduating from high school. When he saved enough money he attended the University of Michigan.
During the Second World War , Miller moved to New York where he began writing plays. Directed by Elia Kazan , his play, All My Sons (1947) dealt with war and business corruption. His next play, also directed by Kazan, Death of a Salesman (1947), and featuring Lee J. Cobb as Willy Loman, won a Pulitzer Prize and became one of the most famous plays in history.
Miller broke with Elia Kazan over his decision to give names of former members of the American Communist Party to the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) . Miller was himself blacklisted by Hollywood when he refused to testify in front of the HUAC. However, this did not stop his plays being performed on stage.

Arthur Miller In an exclusive interview with The World Today programme on BBC World Service, broadcast on Christmas Day, Miller said he feared for the civil rights. The US Government could be seen as "taking advantage" of the situation and increasing its power over the individual, he said. "It's pretty difficult to prove terrorism," he added. "That's the nature of the beast and that's the temptation, not to prove it but simply judge it, and there are a number of people who are more than a little bit alarmed by this development." Outspoken In September Miller spoke out against the attacks, describing them as part of a "war against humanity".

54. The Play
An overview of The Man Who Had All the Luck by Lewis Nichols.
http://partners.nytimes.com/books/00/11/12/specials/miller-luck49.html
November 24, 1944
The Play By LEWIS NICHOLS here can be no doubt that as "The Man Who Had All the Luck" contains a certain amount of merit. There are some good performances and careful staging and one or two effective moments. The fact that they have not been multiplied is the new play's misfortune, for the author and directorArthur Miller and Joseph Fieldsat least have been trying to do something away from the theater's usual stencils. But in the Forrest's current tenant they have not edited out the confusion of the script nor its somewhat jumbled philosophies, nor have they kept it from running over into the ridiculous now and then. "The Man Who Had All the Luck" can be set down as a play which tried, but which did not come offthrough luck or whatever. The discussion of "The Man Who Had All the Luck" is whether success springs from fortune or work, from some design plan about which it's useless to worry, or from care. Mr. Miller takes as a central character an automobile mechanic. He wins his wife when her father, who hated him, is killed; he branches out in business when another mechanic happens along to show him how to fix a car he cannot repair. He gets a farm, he wants children and has one, he starts a mink farm and that is successful also. His friends and others all suffer disasters, and he thinks his luck presently will change, too. That it does not, Mr. Miller concludes finally, is due to the fact that all the things which seemed to be luck were only just rewards for work and care.

This guide is written for teachers and students who are studying Arthur Miller's play All My Sons . The guide is written specifically for students in the UK, but I hope it may be helpful to users from other parts of the world. All My Sons is sometimes set as a text for assessed work in drama for English and English literature exams.
Introduction
The action of the play is set in August 1947, in the mid-west of the U.S.A. The events depicted occur between Sunday morning and a little after two o'clock the following morning. Arthur Miller, the playwright, found the idea for Joe's crime in a true story, which occurred during the second world war: a manufacturer knowingly shipped out defective parts for tanks. These had suffered mechanical failures which had led to the deaths of many soldiers. The fault was discovered, and the manufacturer convicted. In All My Sons, Miller examines the morality of the man who places his narrow responsibility to his immediate family above his wider responsibility to the men who rely on the integrity of his work. Back to top
The background to the action
Three and a half years before the events of the play, Larry Keller was reported missing in action, while flying a mission off the coast of China.

Arthur Miller's The Crucible
(or Picky, Picky, Picky...)
by Margo Burns
Revised: 9/30/10
A NOTE ON THE HISTORICAL ACCURACY OF THIS PLAY
by Arthur Miller "This play is not history in the sense in which the word is used by the academic historian. Dramatic purposes have sometimes required many characters to be fused into one; the number of girls involved in the 'crying out' has been reduced; Abigail's age has been raised; while there were several judges of almost equal authority, I have symbolized them all in Hathorne and Danforth. However, I believe that the reader will discover here the essential nature of one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history. The fate of each character is exactly that of his historical model, and there is no one in the drama who did not play a similar-and in some cases exactly the same-role in history. "As for the characters of the persons, little is known about most of them except what may be surmised from a few letters, the trial record, certain broadsides written at the time, and references to their conduct in sources of varying reliability. They may therefore be taken as creations of my own, drawn to the best of my ability in conformity with their known behavior, except as indicated in the commentary I have written for this text." Because I've been working with the materials of the Salem Witch Trails of 1692 for so long as an academic historian , many people have asked me if I've seen the play or film The Crucible
